Google ranking of a site????

I assume you're talking about "www . mcleodganj .com"? I imagine Google is looking at the domain name , rather than giving relevance to more popular websites just because they happen to have those two keywords in their page title.

I think a lot of people get taken in by page rank. Just because a particular website may have 50,000 back links, 49,999 of them may be absolute rubbish so won't carry much weight.

The way I look at page rank, you are better was having one back links to other sites with a page rank of four, than 500 back links to pages that maybe only have one or no page rank at all. Obviously if you're looking for the extra traffic then that's different. My website has thousands of back links, many of them are on other forums that have absolutely no page rank whatsoever. I can create a new domain, put one back link to my main website which has a page rank of four, within six months that site will have a page rank of three. However, it doesn't mean that it will perform a lot better than a website with only a page rank of one or two.

The site rank first page #2 and yet the PR of the domain is just 0

The reason is that they've optimized the website well.

if you can see they use the keyword as domain name
They've built some high quality backlinks
there's also unique content and some quality images

if the competition is less for your keyword and you build some high quality content and backlinks you'll definitely achieve first page very fast.
