Is SEO Dead For Competitive Niches?

Recently I spoke with a person that runs large PPC campaigns for big companies. He told me that SEO was dead and that buying traffic really is the only way to sustainable traffic. He said of course you can rank for long tailed keywords but if you are in a competitive niche which gets hundreds of thousands of hits a month, and the page ones sites have been ranked for 10+ years, its nearly impossible to compete with them. From my experience I have found this to be true. What do you think?

From my experience I have found this to be bs. You can break into every niche , it's just a matter of how big your budget is.

It's like asking McDonalds If a Subway sandwich is healthier than a Big Mac.

Well of course if you got $100k a month to spend the sky's the limit but I was referring to the average person with a budget of 2-3k a month. Also honestly some subway sandwiches aren't more healthy than a big mac

        I think the average person...

Has more like $200-$300 a month...

        Not $2,000 to $3,000...

        But that's besides the point.

SEO isn't dead for any niche...

        That's plain silly.

Yeah the average person on this forum maybe have $200-300 a month, but I was talking about actually businesses, not some 40 year old guy that still lives with his parents lol. I should have said please respond if you have ranked in the top 3 for a key word with 300k+ hits month. Speculation really isn't what I was after.

Was he by chance trying to sell you services?
I see a lot of PPC based "professionals" say stuff like that. It's mostly BS and a way for them to sign more people up. It's relatively easy to earn more money from your clients, short term, from PPC campaigns than it is by offering pure SEO services. Why, because if you know what keywords to pay for it's not hard to increase profits for that company which in turn allows you to charge more. The problem with it is that it's not long term and has a constant cost attached.

Its not SEO that is dead. It's the will power of the people that is dead. Very few people have what it takes to really succeed in this business. It's like anything else in life if you want it bad enough and have the background to do so then you can make a ton of money doing this.

I really don't think so. SEO is still what makes every website aiming to make big profits succeed. Somehow, I also think that it depends how much you spend on it. But then again, I really believe that it is best to gather accurate figures related to the strengths of your niche before you spend your money on something.

why do people love it so much? Free traffic?
