Just a few questions for everyone who wants to share opinions and tips on .edu backlinks:

What is the value of .edu backlink for search engines?

Would you recommend to get .edu backlinks to your site?

How do you get .edu backlinks (the ethical ways)?

How to find useful .edu sites for your backlinks?

Thanks

  • I don't believe .edu backlinks carry any more weight than others. One place to get edu links is by searching for discussion forums that are on edu sites.
ex. showthread site:.edu - Google Search
Some of the forums will allow links in the signature of posts.

    • .edus are no more valuable than any other backlink.

The reason why people value them so much is because many .edus contain plenty of Google Juice. Lots of it, but that's not due to the extension, its due to their backlinks.
  • .edus and .govs are more respected by the search engines and therefore you get a quality backlink. That's the only PRO of .edu. Please do correct me if I am wrong.

    • sorry, you're wrong... Matt cutts cleared this up about 4 months ago on video... all domain name extensions hold the same value

  • Yup, that's the real reason. EDU's by themselves aren't any more valuable then the next domain, it's because of the types of links that are linking to those EDUs that make them "more" valuable. EDUs attract quality backlinks just because of the nature of there sites (non-commercial, great content, etc...) so the actual GOOG juice you get out of them is more. Same with .gov's.

Having said that, there are plenty of .com's that potential hold the same value as an EDU would, it just depends on there backlink structure.
  • Anchor text back links or back links from a keyword related sites back to yours is golden in the eyes of SEO. As well as internal linking to your own tag related articles.
  • You can volunteer to have a website designed for an educational institution or well known charity. In exchange you'd get a link back.

It takes some time but it might be worth it, specially if the institution already has a high PR site.

  • I got several .edu links in the past. I got one from teaching in their adult education program, and a few more posting on a forum. I can't say it helped me all that much.
  • if so valuable backlink. edu?
how the comparison between. edu pr 0 with .com or .net pr 3?
    which better?

    • As the other posters have kindly explained, the .com or .net PR3 would be worth more in terms of Page Rank. A .edu extension means nothing by itself, however they're worth so much since most .edu's do have high Keyword Authority, Page Rank, and Trust due purely to other sites linking to them, and their content. The TLD of .edu or .gov means nothing by itself however.
  • Domain extensions are all equal in the eyes of search engines(Google)

    • As already stated above - thats the size of it really

As for "chasing them" I never have, as the niche's I've been involved in so far, don't seem to have a natural connection to such domains.

If I were to have a site that would genuinely be useful and relevant to a .edu then I would try and get the link "properly" rather than using their blog/forum etc.

If you can get links off the BBC - thats great too. Something which I've been fortunate to do so, and the ones received are followed
  • for me .edu is same with others. Thats just depend how you do the seo thingy in a witty way

  • People shouldn't just focus on one type of link. Mix it up a little. Do a little of everything each day. If a site is relevant, and holds some authority then a link from that site will do you good.

As mentioned, edu and gov links will automatically get linked to from other authoritive sites and other govs and edu's so that's why it is worth getting links from them.
