How do I learn link building with the aim of increasing traffic?

Hello everyone,

This is my first post and I just wanted to ask your advice on the quickest and most efficient way I could learn link building.

I have no experience with internet marketing whatsoever but I'm learning from a mentor and doing my own research as well.

Aside from the obvious which is self-studying through Google, what are the books, articles or materials that you have read that were most valuable to you to learn link building?

How has it helped you to come to a point wherein you could produce results, even though starting small, immediately? (e.g. see some traffic metrics going on)

Thanks

Realize a couple of things about the market
    1. There are thousands of people working for less than the US minimum wage doing link building.
    2. Google's recent algorithm updates have rendered much of the link building business obsolete.

With that knowledge, you would need to learn to find truly high quality links, which will probably be gotten by speaking directly with owners of high quality sites, not buying stuff through a middle man. It is about building relationships over time and there really is not a short cut, though many will tell you otherwise.

It's important to identify if you want to increase your traffic via the links or use the links to increase your visibility in the SERPs and get traffic from the search engines.

They are two different goals and would require two different approaches. The answer you got above only takes one of these into account.

That's not to say that creating links specifically to gain traffic through them wouldn't also increase your visibility in the SERPs. In fact getting links from sites that have their own audience and can deliver plenty of traffic just by having that link will often be favored by most search engines, not punished.

Yukon is someone you might consider listening to if you are looking to gain traffic through links themselves.

I have uploaded an (old-ish) PDF which might give you some extra ideas However, don't take it as gospel - I would personally simply IGNORE the paid links section & Article Marketing!
