Exact Match VS Silo - Who Wins? Do those tools still work?

by mpluto 9 replies
Hi Friends,

Couple questions here for professionals:

1. These days, what wins for better rankings, silo structure or exact match domain with good content, photos, etc?

2. Are keyword tools like Niche Finder still effective after Google changed to Keyword Planner?

I want to find some new niches and I am confused either I should get a Niche Finder or not and then - concentrate on exact match domain or silo structure?

Thanks!

Exact Match VS Silo - Who Wins? Do those tools still work?
It's not really much of a comparison, an EMD is a site name which doesn't matter as far as SEO (might help SERP CTR), a silo is site structure (link flow).

On Google SERPs, EMDs don't really have any SEO weight, Bing/Yahoo might be a different situation (different algo.).

Silos still work today just like they did years ago. Bots follow links, with a silo your basically helping to guide them down a structured path.

      What Yukon said.

They don't have to be mutually exclusive. You can have an EMD niche site with a silo structure. Just because a site utilizes an EMD doesn't mean it can't be silod.

The whole "silo" thing is pretty much a marketing gimmick really. It's not hard to have a good navigational structure and interlink intelligently in the body content of posts.

Guys, thank you ALL for great replies.

I assume it would be best to have EMD + Silo + Authority all in one then, right?

In the past, I was building direct response EMD, just 1 page with excellent sales copy.

Now that Google doesn't appreciate 1 page sales copy website, I have to figure out alternative way. I still want to use that sales copy structure though.

I think that EMD is not needed ,its good if its not too long. although you can have partial kw in it.

What i am interested in , is parent/child relationship really that important?
What i mean by this is:

If you have permalink structure %postname% and you make 1 main page that will be your primary KW like:
          mydomain.com/dog-training

          and you make support post
          mydomain.com/dog-training-tips-for-beginners
and link the same way as with normal silo. This way post is not child of the page, but the link flow would be the same.

          Does this make sense ?

So would it be better to build an authority site then?

It`s always better to build an authority vs crap sites. Learn silo structure, build authority silo website and enjoy advantage in serps. End of the story

The EMD advantage is no longer there but of course small niche sites do make money if you have done your keyword research right. For example Tung Tran of cloudlivingjourney started a niche site on adjustable dumbbells, ranked it in a month(38 days to be exact), the site nets him $700 to $1500 per mo and then he sells it off on Flippa for 10k.

I followed the same thing and my site too made some money. There's another fellow Bishop or something and what he does is make small sites on embarassing niches like "cold sores" or penis problems(not enlargement) and he sold two of his for like $70k each after 6 months.

So yep niche sites do work, they are easier to rank

Isn't that every other story on Flippa?
