In a Silo, how closely related do the landing pages need to be?

Hi,

I have been looking into creating a site with a silo structure and read quite a few threads on how it's to be structured. I just wondered how related to the main index page the landing pages need to be?

For example, if you had a site called computers.com (about computers obviously), would 2 landing pages such as 'which anti-virus software' and 'how to change a hard disk' be ok? These are just an example off the top off my head.

Pretty much everybody can see that those 2 landing pages are extremely linked to computers but they don't actually have the word computers in them. Most of the examples I see always have the site title with a certain word in it and then the landing pages tend to be that keyword that has been broadened a bit more. This is great for making example charts and things but when actually trying to make a site it can be a bit hard to have the landing pages so closely related.

Thanks,
Dan

That seems fine to me. Remember... you always want to cater to the user. If someone who lands on computer.com would be interested in reading and clicking through to topics on anti-viruses and hard disks, then it makes sense to include those topics into your silo.

Its amazing just how many people that trips up

The easy-peasy way to do it is use LSI, aka "related" keywords

So your example would be correct - kinda

Your examples are really 3rd level articles - not 2nd level silo landing pages

What would be more correct for the silo landing pages would be the components:
    system board
    hard disk
    RAM
    CPU
    Software
    etc. etc.

Then the 2 examples you gave would be siloed under hard-disk, and software respectively
