What SEO keywords should we aim for a blog?

When building backlinks (I'm new at this), I realise that we need the keywords in order for our website to rank high for that keyword.

But what about a blog, say a technology blog which has lots of range of articles of different topics? (news, reviews, tips, etc)

If you rank high, say, on "technology blog", that doesn't make your blog rank high on the articles in general, right? Or do you have to do backlinking per article + the keywords you want on every article?

Bingo. You want to build backlinks to each article with their respective keywords.

You can still build links with anchor texts "technology blog" to your homepage, but target other long tail keywords for your articles.

Just make sure your article keywords have enough traffic to justify the effort you put into building links. You don't want to build links for a keyword that only gets searched 30 times per month

Thanks I knew the articles that got lots of traffic in the past and somehow they got de-ranked to some pages below (used to be on the 1st page or 1st result, even). Just want my site to get back to its glorious days

Planning to hire an SEO expert or buy some of the package in this forum but I'm still new at this, so not sure which to get + a little bit scared and all

In such a scenario, your main keyword wouldn't be something of the highest priority since you will be looking to build a following through the articles and not the main index page itself. I would look at some of the top technology blogs and see how they are targeting their keywords.

Ah, thought so, just need someone who knows about SEO to confirm this

In the past, I got lots of hits from "Product X reviews" (gadgets, mostly). Although that keywords are pretty general and frequent, I normally get the products first from the brands to review before it even hits the shelves

Or at least, I know which posts were popular before on my blog and they are pretty much all dead now because the drop in ranks, thanks to Penguin

Ideally each blog post should have one primary keyword and 2-3 secondary keywords / LSI keywords. Take a look at some authority site on your niche or look at categories on DMOZ.org for your niche. This should give you a good idea on how to structure your blog and what categories you should go for.

Yes, you need to build Backlinks for every article you want to rank well. But remember Backlinks aren't the only Ranking Factor.

If you're doing proper Onsite SEO, chances are good that you may reach even the 1st Results Page without backlinks.

I normally don't ask from others about what keyword I need to use, because no one knows what your blog is, more than you. Choose your Primary Keyword for the homepage & articles after checking few on Keyword Planner tool of Adwords.

That would help you to optimize your content for the right keyword.

    Best Wishes,
    Shyam Chathuranga.

Thanks for the reply, Shyam. It's just I had lots of articles on1st Results Page last time (so I assume I had a good onsite SEO). Though after Penguin, traffic went downhill (from 3000 a day to 200 a day) and I notice the articles that brought me traffic were no longer on the first page.

So I assume it's because they don't have any backlinks (which I never did any work of.. most of the links I got were from people who found my articles useful and posted them on Yahoo answers, review sites, etc)

this is mostly depend on what is your website on. this is really important that you choose the keyword along with your content of the website. and definitely need to choose the keyword what get the maximum search but also need to keep in mind about the competition too.

  • If you are building some backlinks through blog commenting, you should target some high quality blogs which have got commentluv premium activated. It will ease some pressure of building links for latest posts.

You're better off creating highly optimized blog posts targeting very long tail keywords oppose to going after the big large generic keywords every other man and his dog are targeting, if your site has enough authority you can hit page 1 just on optimization alone for long tails due to low/no comp for the keyword...

Thanks. The site used to be very high in authority (I know this because every time I posted something, it ended up going on the first page almost all the time). Til Penguin came and ruin it (bring lots of keywords rank to oblivion). Thinking to hire an SEO expert to have a look and possibly fix it up somehow

I was going to answer this, but this guy said it all. Authority to the main domain will pass through to the inner pages and automatically rank them well for low comp keywords

Yes. It's a very easy keyword with no competition. As long as you have 4 posts you don't need anything else. No one cares about mesothelioma.

Seriously - where does this stuff come from.
