Yeah, you only get paid if a legitimate visitor clicks on your site. Page views and hits that doesn't lead to visitors visiting your actual site and hitting the ads won't earn you money.

1. Find a market/niche

2. Research your keywords usually anything with a global search of 3500+.

3. Ensure the CPC of the keywords are above $1 for keywords generating 3000+ above and CPC of ($0.50+) for keywords with 10000+ global queries.

4. Build and optimize your site for your keywords. Don't forget to optimize your content as well.

5. Offer valuable content and/or download link that you continually update. Just something that makes your visitors love, crave, appreciate your blog and wanna come back.

6. Monetize strictly with adsense alone if you want to earn the most and avoid distractions. Let adsense be adsense and affiliate be affiliate.

7. Rank your 3 and more keywords on Google.com position 1 to 4.

8. Build more pages and keywords as well as rank.

9. Rinse, repeat and move into other business model. Anything you don't have full control over is not reliable.

To increase your earnings you can't buy traffic, but you can drive targetted traffic through ads ect. You only get paid for the clicks, not for the traffic. If you have targetted traffic for adsense then you can earn good money.
