Are banner ads back in fashion?

I spent a few hours yesterday doing some analysis on a client's competitor who ranks very well for a bunch of keywords.

Their best backlinks, in terms of PR, come from banner ads on community sporting and not-for-profit sites. Most of the pages these banner ads are on are PR2 to PR4 pages.

Maybe Google has gone back to 1998 when banner ads were all the rage?

Maybe as well as raw urls, brand names, click-heres and other post-penguin anchor text variations, banner ads are also the way to go.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Image hyperlinks pass PR the same as text links. They're both still clickable HTML links.

Yes they do pass PR. I guess my theory is that image links seem more "natural" than they used to post the 4th October Google update.

Maybe the big brands are ranking better now, not because they are big, but because they invest in graphic ads on other sites with decent PR ?

I wouldn't say image links are more natural, I mean there's a time/place for both text & image hyperlinks, just depends on which one makes sense for the situation.
