Instant Search vs. Keyword Planner

If you've ever written a post targeting a phrase that comes up in Google's instant search function, yet has no monthly search volume in Keyword Planner, did you manage to get a decent amount of traffic to the post?

I'm not talking about trendy subjects that suddenly has people searching, as there isn't enough data for Google to provide the search volume.

If these phrases are coming up in instant search, surely there has be some people searching. When looking at some of the suggestions I thought the search volume would be a couple of hundred per month, but Google just shows a dash.

  • I cant recall exactly where, but I'm sure it was a Google source. Saying that a large % of search queries are queries never made again. Seems to run true with your findings so far.
  • Google Instant works differently from Google Keyword Planner. I think that you need to learn more how Google Instant works for users so you can differentiate this tool from GKP.

    Google Instant is based from what users type in the search box. The suggestions are not based from the results seen and computed in GKT as Google Instant results can also be based from partial search query of a user.

    Like for example, you type in hotels in West Coast. You noticed that there are a lot of suggestions from just typing this key phrase. Users can enter the term 'hotels" or complete the key phrase 'hotels in West Coast" or perhaps they can also enter other 'suggested' terms from there.

    The keywords suggested here are not based from Google Keyword Planner results BUT based mainly from how the way users search online.

    So knowing that, is Google Instant still important when it comes to SEO? Yes. If you are targeting keywords (you get from Google Keyword Planner) like hotels in Miami or Beach hotels in Miami, you may get direct visits from Google Instant searches with terms 'hotels' or 'miami hotels'.

    If you are running Google Webmaster tools, you will notice that there has been an increase of impressions lately. This is also because of Google instant. I hope that makes sense!

  • That makes sense. I didn't know that Google Instant would store and show suggestions even if just a single user typed something in.
