This video pointed me in the right direction for an indepth understanding of SEO

I discovered I was doing a few things wrong

Or, at least, doing things that worked once but are now less effective due to the latest Google changes. It was good to get right up to date!

Yes, I have to agree. It certainly is easier to rank a video than a site or blog.

It's just a matter of knowing, and doing, proper SEO (one time thankfully) on the video. I still get quite a lot of nicely targeted buyers via video's I put up way back when.

It's easier to get any Google related site better than an independent site. Google loves itself.

Your website should ideally contain a good mix of keywords that are competitive, popular and highly profitable (i always rely on Keyword Country to get best suggestions for relevant niche and keywords before to start optimization).

I think it's the most important thing for beginners to learn keyword research. You should know how to find out the profitable keyword with low competition. I remember that when I started internet marketing, I
always targeted the wrong keyword that wasted a lot of my time and energy. So mastering keyword research is your first step.

Another thing to keep in mind is that SEO is also marketing. You should care more about the quality of your content and building relationships with people. Then you will get quality backlinks naturally and easily.

Keyword research and backlinks are the two most important elements for SEO.

I would suggest you to go with Moz basic SEO course. This course is very simple, and allows you to learn simple techniques with little effort. After that you can try Quick Sprout Advance SEO guide by Neil Patel, which will make you understand how SEO works now.

    All the best!

Before you even consider building links, get your on-site optimization sorted first:

Title tag - most important aspect of a page - main keyword phrase at the start but also optimize for CTR from the search results.

META description - can include alternative keyword phrases and again should be worded so as to encourage clicks

Page URL - try to incorporate keywords in the URL

H1 - the main header tag - must only have 1 per page - use close variation on your main keyword

H2 - H6 - additional header tags for sub-headings. I rarely go beyond H3 though as in reality it's not normally necessary

Breadcrumbs - can be useful for both user and search engines - if marked up correctly, Google will show your breadcrumb in search results which gives you an additional bit of search engine real estate.

Internal linking - link related articles together using your target keyword phrases and variations on them

Canonical tag - depending on the type of site, you may need to include this tag. Especially true for ecommerce sites that have different page URLs for things like sizes or colors. Basically tells search engines what the main URL is for a product/page and then does not index the rest.

image alt tags - basically tells search engines what an image is depicting

keyword use - do not stuff too many instances of your main keyword into one page. Use synonyms and related terms (keyword research is an essential part of SEO)

There's probably more than this but off the top of my head this is what I would say are the main things for on-page optimization.

You need to study SEO deeper before you start doing it, I don't want to recommend any old guide I know, factors that affect rankings keep changing from time to time. You need to buy a new course or read the discussion going on the forum and gather knowledge.

Things have recently changed over the last 6 months and G have changed their algorithm a lot. It's actually good time for you to get started as the old boys like myself used old tactics only for the Algorithm to change and get punished. I recently had to work very hard to clean up a site that was punished and G sent me enough examples for me to work out what they don't like so here goes.

    - No exact match anchor text keep it longtail i.e. not "buy prescription drugs" but "there are many places to buy prescription drugs"

    - link to inner posts

    - They don't like author bio links

    - I think they even detect places that say guest post

    - have other links in the article for other sites just having One is far too obvious.

Also having a good Social media presence that is active is Very powerful at the moment.

Hope this helps I dare any pro's to disagree with any this? Too many people on WF keep info to themselves and don't wanna help each other out

In nutshell you should use three core steps of SEO....

    1. start with strong content and solid on page seo...
    2. get as much high quality links to your site..
    3. strongly present your site in social media covering all the main sites...

Repeat for two months as Google generally takes 28 days to update its data... and see the results

HI helenal, whatever you are doing about your site, just remember two major things that plays a vital role in the ranking of a site.
    1. Content
    2. backlinks
Don't use duplicate content for your site & try to post unique and fresh content with every post, you post for your site promotion.
Always try to get backlinks from authorized sites related to your niche having high PR or quality backlinks, don't get backlinks from low quality sites or crappy sites.
And further you can read moz pdf or blog, where you can get the updated techniques in seo.

SEO is simple as that On Page & Off Page.

    Definition:

    On Page SEO:
Build content that people love ( with your keywords)

    Off Page SEO:
If people love your content they will add your link to there site

Set up a Google Analytics and Webmasters account and hook it up to your site. This is an important first step, next you must research and learn how to promote your business. You will probably need a Twitter,Facebook,LinkedIn account and if you are trying to raise money, maybe even an Angel.co account.
