Why did my traffic disappear overnight?

I built a new niche website about a hobby I'm passionate about. I started the site with about 200 pages of content and within a few weeks of launch I was getting about 50-60 visitors a day consistently.

This went on for a few months and then all of the sudden on Oct 20th the traffic dropped to about 5 visits a day. The graph literally tanks and I didn't make any changes at all to the site. I haven't done anything at all for SEO except link some of my youtube videos to the site... Any ideas?

You could have been hit by one of the hundreds of algorithm updates Google makes a year.

If you are building an authority site like you say, definitely use social media as well. If it is something you are passionate about, there is likely other people who share the same passion that you can engage with using things like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc.

Don't only rely on search engine traffic.

You should analysis your keywords ranking or compare your traffic on your keywords in last two months, then you can get idea what was the reason of getting traffic down. And may be your site would be penalized by penguin 2.1.

I don't think Google like you and demonstrated it in their new updates

It gets us all at some point over the years.

I don't think you or anyone above even read the OP thread. He said clearly he has not done any external SEO. So where Penguins come into it, I don't know.

He got a boost for query freshness, now its faded, now its time for external SEO.

This might be because of your low quality content or via bad backlinks. Since you said you didnt do anything bad in SEO, I guess you have to check with your content quality. If you still think that your content is good enough, then try checking your keyword rankings.

May be there is a chance that your keywords are taken by a competitor over night! Try to beat him if thats the case, else check with your webnasters whether your site content is indexing or not!

I agree with Satish if you haven't done any backlinking then it is down to other factors - take a critical look at your content - is it keyword stuffed or repetitive etc, and also look at your rankings etc - how far have you moved down the rankings to determine if you've dropped to page 10 or just a few places?

(Have you checked your backlink profile to see if anyone else has been building backlinks to your site?)

I don't think that his has something to do with panda and penguin updates. have you checked your outbound links if they are still active? you can use ahref to check for the New and Lost referrals. one reason why our traffic is decreasing its because the discrepancy of Lost and New Referrals are huge. remember that you have to increase your New Referrals rather than the Lost ones. compare the last two months check for the websites that's giving you traffic before and the current site status so that you can figure out what site you are loosing traffic.

It's almost the end of the year, we were expecting an update, but it haven't yet arrived. You need to figure out the keywords you are targetting and fix the errors in you targetting strategies.

Thanks for all the responses. Since I haven't done any outside SEO on the site I'm sure it's not penalized. If nothing changed except the rankings then I don't think it is internal keyword problems either. If it is a freshness thing how does this work? Does Google rank a new site highly and then drop it after a few months? Will this be difficult to get back ranked higher?

Here is an image of the analytics:

It literally falls overnight on Oct 20th from about 50-60 visits a day to 5-6. I don't have ranking data on it because I don't have proxies to scrape ranks and there are like 200 pages/keywords.

Can it be because he hasn't done any SEO backlinking that the algorithm "penalises" him for not having strong backlinks to his site? (or more like other sites outrank his)

You said you haven't started building links to your blog. Then try to build some and see if there will be some changes.

Google honeymoon period? New sites generally rank well for a month or so.

How are you getting your visitors? Is it from google or social media? If it's from google, then you gotta find out which keywords your visitors are using to get to your page. Do some analysis on those keywords and check everyday if they are going down in google search. Or try go on analytics and check your site's visitor acquisition? See where your previous daily 50-60 visitors are visiting from and compare it to what you have now.

It's hard to tell exactly what could be going on. Google is constantly tweaking and updating monthly so any refresh can change your ranking. It may be a good idea to know where you are ranking and check your competition above you in the rankings as well. You could have dropped some positions for your keywords.

Checking your links is also a good idea to see if there are any low-quality links pointing to your website. I like ahrefs.com, but their free version is not that great. I have a subscription to ahrefs, so let me know if you want a printout of your linking profile. Just PM me and I can do that for you. If you haven't done any SEO or linking, then this may not be the case, but wanted to offer it to you anyways.

I also see that this is a new site, so as mentioned in other comments, it could be that it started out of the gate ranking and now it settled into a position Google feels is warranted. That is a common occurrence.
