Domain name significance - a curly one here!

Hi all... a question for you:

I have a friend who has a site website design company (Website Design Services | Professional Website Design Auckland) who is wanting to know if it would be smarter for him to target the key phrase "web design" (which has three times as many searches and only 38% more SER's) or leverage off the keyword in his domain name (i.e. website) and chase "website design" which obviously has a much lower KEI.

Currently he ranks poorly for "web design" but is #1 for website design. His site is not well structured from an SEO perspective and there is huge room for improvement. It (the site) is currently being rebuilt with this in mind.

So, while no-one can ever begrudge a #1 ranking, would it be worth the risk trying to target "web design" from here on in, and look to boost traffic to the site? I was thinking that from an LSI point of view, he wouldn't necessarily lose much ranking for the term "website design" anyway, even if he made a dramatic shift towards "web design"...they are such similar terms.

Your thoughts would be appreciated

Build 2 different websites promoting the same thing and link together for better results.

I agree with the member comments above....

I think it would be a bad idea to try and change keywords for that website. It would be a better idea to use a second website and optimize it for the new keywords that you wish to target. If optimized properly, the first site could be used to help establish relevancy of the first site.

If you have any further questions or concerns, feel free to post them.

Another way of doing this would be to optimise the existing site for the required terms; add another page targeting the terms "web design".
