Quick Ranking Question

Real quick ranking question (or so I hope so).

So I used a social bookmarking/press release campaign to get incoming links to a article of mine. It ranked as #2 (as well as my different content with the same keyword that was posted on blogger blogs, ezine etc etc ). It was #2 for about a week. I go on today and my site isn't even in the top 20. The ezine and some press releases are still on the first page. My hubpages, my site and some other places were ranked on the first page for about a week but now they aren't there.

The # 1 spot has just stayed. So why is there all this change? It frustrates me because I rank high for a few days for various keywords then after a few days my article is gone? What's the deal?

  • Google the term "Query Deserves Freshness" and you'll see that new content often ranks high when first discovered by Google. Then it drops down to its actual ranking among the rest of the older content in the index. Continue getting some links pointing to your content using your chosen keyword as anchor text and it'll rise back up, but it may take awhile.

  • Quick answer: QDF which is well explained by John. But, keep on working getting good quality backlinks to go with your on-page optimization and you will back in the top SERPs.

    • Thanks. So I'm in the fitness niche. For my specific keyword, bodybuilding.com's article stays on the top. Now I know they don't continually build links to the specific page. Do domain links,as in incoming links to the domain keep the specific page high?

So if I write 1 article a day, let's say, do I have to keep building backlinks for every article every single day or am I just confused? It's impossible to build new backlinks every single day to every single article to a site that has over 100 article you know? So I think I'm confused.
  • That is one of the reasons blogs rank high in Google because you add to blogs frequently as opposed to static pages. so if you are using a blog add post to it frequently and like magic you will see that all the other things you do will work for you.
  • I understand that but for example, one of my keywords terms consistently ranks second to a keyword on a domain that does nothing to build backlinks. Even when i blog I'm not building links to that specific keyword.
  • one suggestion I would offer is to make sure that your onsite linking is superb. One of the best wordpress plugins that I have ever seen is the YARRP plugin which creates links at the bottom of your post to related posts. Google loves related pages linking to one another. It lets google know better what your page is about. With it, you can have a bunch of links from related pages on your blog to other related pages. Without it, you may only have one or two from related pages.
