Did I Make A SEO Mistake By Choosing A .US Over A .COM?

In the past almost every single website that I launched off used a .com. The latest website that I started uses a .US because it's more appropriate for my chosen topic. I'm also targeting people in the United States. Was this a huge mistake as far as SEO goes? Or will I rank more highly in the search engines for American visitors?

Yea, I'd consider that a mistake unless you're going super nichey and you're building an authority site where none exist already.

ROTFLMAO! Many, many government agencies use a .us...
and like they never rank? Holy cow you people are getting
more and more inane by the hour.

A .us is just fine. In fact, start judging these people by their
ridiculous answers. Ignore any sig links for anything SEO
      related. They are clueless.

Seriously. You ARE targeting people in the US?!?!?!?!

Reall, Is it so? From where did you got the information? Have you ever ranked a site with .us TLD, if not then please don't mislead people.

@OP, .us TLD is perfectly fine and there is nothing wrong with it. Its a country specific TLD targeting US and its quite relevant with your targeted audience. If your site has good quality content and if you do the seo properly then i cant see any problem.

There should be no issue in using a .us TLD. If you are looking to rank for a local search term then you may actually get better results. Many people recommend not to use .info domains, however I've good good results even with .info.

Yes it was a mistake if it is your only domain. Now purchase a dot com domain with the same name and use each domain to backlink to each other.

Having a .us domain shouldn't be a problem with good content and promotion. I once had a .us domain that ranked very well in the SERPs for several niche competitive KWs.
