Site Down 72 hrs = Loss of All rankings?

My site was down for 72 hours (thank you Hostgator) and a week later I have lost ALL of my Google rankings and am receiving just 15% of the traffic (from yahoo + Bing).

My question is, can a site being down and unavailable for 72 hours affect its Google rankings so dramatically?

Same thing happened to one of my sites with Hostgator hosting, only it was my own fault since I forgot to pay the hosting. The site bounced right back within a day or two like it was never down.

IF you have decent quality links & already held strong SERP positions, you should be fine.

What would you do if you were Google and could not access a site for 3 days? Would you continue to show it in the search results?

  • Your SERPS should balance out as long as none of you links have been removed because webmaster thought your site expired.

Yes, it can affect it. It will recover in several weeks but you still have to contend with a significant traffic drop for that time.

Have you had experience with this? If yes, what was your situation?

It happened with me quite a few time when I was using leaseweb.com

If your website stays down for 2-3 days, you will lose rankings unfortunately.

My website ranking was #4 before downtime. After 4 days downtime they were moved to #30.

So dramatically, if your website is down you will be experiencing ranking drops.

Yes, I have. I built a site, got it ranked first page for medium difficulty keywords then turned the VPS it was hosted on off for 2 weeks as a test. I was interested to see what the impact would be.

        - There were a lot of Webmaster Tools alerts
        - Zero traffic, obviously, for 2 weeks
        - Lots of spidering as soon as the VPS was turned back on
        - Organic traffic started picking up 7-10 days after it was turned back on
        - Traffic returned to normal levels 3-4 weeks after

    Nothing to worry about really.

I have a client whose website was off-line for over a month, but I'm pretty sure that if we build a couple of really good quality links to the website, the rankings will come back.

You should however contact your hosting company and ask them why this downtime has happened.

Downtime is never good for rankings.
