Local directory

Hi Warriors,

I have just finished creating a local directory specifically for a city in the UK. It has a fresh feel and is integrated with Google maps. I am planning to create more of these as the sites grow. So far the site has quite a few relevant link from the local city and has a PR2, DA22 and PA33.
I am charging £10 a month basic listing // £25 a month for premium with a bidding system when it gets more popular.

I want to get an email to as many businesses in the city as possible. What is the best way to collect emails manually, scrapebox, other paid or free service you can recommend?
Also any comments and feedback on the state of directories would be helpful.

  • Emails to businesses you don't know are likely to end up deleted or marked as spam.

There are a few services in the UK that offer that kind of contact detail for a price - Thomson Local, etc.

Scraping is doable but hard work (learning curve for most of the software programs for instance) and not every site includes publicly readable email addresses for that very reason.

For a local directory, it can be chicken and egg to start with - they've not heard of you so they don't want to advertise but once they find you coming up high in the results then attitudes change.

    Good luck!
  • Thanks

I think I might try local advertising on small sites with good traffic and a small adwords campaign.
  • With the amount you are charging, your lifetime customer value is likely to be pretty high so if I were you I'd seriously be considering going physical with a well designed flyer/letter.

I believe Royal Mail offer some sort of b2b mailing service - you'll pay a fair amount but it stands a better chance of being seen and will mark you out as a serious business rather than just some fly by night website.
