hey guys, just starting to get into serious keyword research for my blog. The blogs already fairly established with a thousands of existing links out there but ive done a very poor job of SEO for my existing content so Im trying to be a little better about evaluating keywords for posts moving forward so im not so heavily reliant on referral traffic.

Ive identified a keyword that gets around 1000 searches a month for a particular post.

On the first page there's a couple online stores (I know I wont beat those)
But there's a few sites that have pages similar to what mine would look like for this term. I've ran one of them on open site explorer and their domain authority is similar to mine, and page authority is 17/100... they've also only got 18 links to their page, which are all internal links from the same site.

I know I can beat that amount of links from internal linking from my own site, social media links, blog commenting and a handful of do-follow links. It seems like I should be able to beat this #3 site right? Or at least get up there on the first page?

Am I on the right track here as far as what I should be looking for regarding first page competition evaluation?

It sounds like you're on the right track! Also, with Google's latest update, if your keyword at all revolves around a problem, try and answer it within your post, naturally (using similar keywords) without overly stuffing your post with just that one keyword. Likewise, if you have images, change the file names to the keyword and variations of, use a Header (with the keyword phrase, but just one, though some people suggest more), so that Google sees your post is truly about what you are striving for.
Lastly, remember that the keyword, or keyword phrase, doesn't have to be in the exact order that you found it...Ie, if your phrase is "home remedies for acne", you can also write "Remedies for Curing Acne From Home", etc. Mix it up a bit, and don't just use the same phrase over and over, use synonyms too. You want it to appear natural, like the way most of us talk!

    Best of luck Marjorie

    My opinion only . . .

Write a dozen original articles around the keyword (or phrase) you're trying to rank for. Post them on your blog, one every three days. Make sure Google is indexing them. Make each article unique - something a little different (a point of view, a new idea, a way to implement, a professional opinion, etc) but all written to emphasize the same keyword.

This will do more for your ranking, in a shorter time period, that worrying about SEO, linking, commenting, social media, etc.

Why? Because you're focusing on, and writing for, your audience - not the search engines.

    The best to you,

    Steve

thanks for your reply but this is for an already established blog...I write 4-5 posts a week already and they get a lot of referral traffic. Im just trying to add the google side of the traffic equation now.

      Edit: Thanks for moving mods!
