if pagerank doesn't matter in getting #1 on SERP, then what factors do?

please list the factors in order of importance in your opinion on what it takes to make the #1 spot on SERP for google (if you agree pagerank doesn't matter for SERP)

    Backlinks
    Its most important factor. Before google "freeze" niches like payday loans many guys ranked it with spammy backlinks. How this would be possible in case backlinks are not most important?

    Well, I keep it simple.

    I try to get relevant backlinks from the homepages of websites which are atleast PR 3.

    That seems to do the trick for me.

    I don't think so, my webmaster forum increased PR in this google update and I try to check my keywords, it also increase 3 to 4 positions on search results. I think PR affected to my rankings

    Don't forget that you should NOT build backlinks to your homepage only... if you have a blog, everytime you write a new article, start building links to it. And don't forget that UNIQUE content is the "MAGIC" that will help you be even on a higher position in SE's!

    Pagerank is a measure of the quantity and quality of the number of backlinks pointing to a website. Since both of the aforementioned factors do play into search rankings, then PR is also correlated with search engine rankings.

    PR is a direct result of backlinks and their "strength" pointing to a domain.
    (This is SEO 101 kindergarten-level essentials).

    To say "Pagerank doesn't matter" is pure nonsense. Because even if "pagerank" as a metric *per se* is supposed to have no importance any longer...the backlinks who lead to the PR indeed still have.

    Or else...explain to me how a PR6 domain (with a good established link-profile, mind you!) ranks incredibly for all kinds of search terms...and I am talking #1 or #2 positions.
