Anyone know if posting news articles with some extra commentary for some blog posts is a good or bad idea?

For example let's say you sell wine online and there are stories in the news related to your industry do you think occasionally posting part of a news article from another sites with quotes, citation and additional commentary/words from yourself is a good or bad idea? Could google see this as spam or should it be fine if done correctly?

Thanks

If you write the rest of the story with sense and quality, sure it's a good idea. I would even provide a no-follow link to the source. Your post will be indexed and will not harm your blog. Than you can go to the source page (if has any value) and post link in comment to your blog post with good written blog comment. This kind of comments will be even approved if moderated, and will drive traffic to your site...

If you really want that text to appear on your blog, but you don't want to risk of getting penalties for duplicated content, you can always add it as an image, simply by taking a Print Screen of that site...

No reason to even include the source. That's exactly what news bloggers
      and reporters do.

Common knowledge that is reported does not need a source. Obviously,
if you are using a photo, you should.

You are watching the Eagles playing in a blizzard. You do not need to
cite any source to comment on why that's crazy.

I saw on the news tonight that someone was stabbed in Walmart on
Black Friday. Do we live in a country of idiots? You betcha! And on
and on....blah blah blah. No source needed.

I can't think of a single news item that is copyrighted. Notice I said news
      item. Not article.

You would not need to cite any source for blogging about Carrie Underwood
      doing The Sound of Music...

I do cite sources, sometimes, if needed. Like Consumer Reports saying
what car is #1 in value. I would cite that, but that's only because that's CR
      own stuff.

Flip that around to the most stolen car. If that data is provided by govt
statistics, it's then common knowledge and I may or may not want to
cite any source. I don't believe any data like that can be copyrighted.
Detroit's population implosion and bankruptcy are out there for everyone
      to see.

There's no reason to nofollow a link. Why would you put spam or an
untrusted link on your site? Meaningless here.

I'd agree with most of this information. Just keep in mind, articles are copyrighted, news isn't, just like you said.

Sometimes linking to a news site can be good though, Google likes to see you link to authority sites on occasion.
