Whats the advantages of buying Expired Domains over Expiring domains ?

Hi guys,

Just started to use Register compass to search for some high PR domains touse as money sites and backlink blogs,

What exactly is it when I`m checking the domains and some have the full website while other will just show the `this domain is available`

Ie this domain.. hxxp://www.aaie.com .. Which has the website still, And this domain.. hxxp://www.amcwc.com ... Which is just the parked domain.

Why is one still attached to the original site ? Because its an expiring domain ? and the other is a expired domain right ?

So when I`m looking to buy a domain which one do I go for ?

Or am I looking at the wrong is the domain with the site still attached not available to buy until it expires and its on godaddy auction gaining interest ?

Please advise

James

I usually don't bother with expiring domains. I've found more often than not that they wind up being registered prior to the end of the redemption period.

I'd suggest looking at auction domains and expired domains. Auction domains cost more, since you can get an expired domain for the cost of the registration. But it's hard to find great expired domains. You can find decent ones though. But more often than not someone buys a good domain before it goes to expired status.

Auction domains (or expiring domains for that matter) have an added benefit that they retain their original age. An aged domain is generally considered more trustworthy than a newer domain. Expired domains may still have links pointing to them, but they start over in terms of domain age. So just not quite as powerful as a domain that is older.

But you can find good domains in either place. Just depends upon how much you're willing to spend.

Jim in your examples case its a private owner auction. In such cases the domain need not be expiring at all so the site is active. Most sites that are still active with existing operational sites will be private owner auctions, I have seen a few cases where the registrar did not shut down the domain that was expiring but thats relatively rare.

Why thank you very much Mike !

So there can also be domains for sale that are still an active website but the business or reason for the site has finished and the owner knows the domain has value so he puts it on auction.

Then there`s expired domains that have recently expired but still have all there PR juice and other values,

So is there another one `expiring` and are they just for sale by a owner who knows the domain has value just the same as the example but without the website ?

    Thank you very much

Yes, there are also expiring domains. These domains are, well, about to expire. They have not yet been re-registered by their owner so Register Compass is letting you know about them.

Sometimes you can place a backorder at a premium price on an expiring domain and if it does expire, and get through the redemption period prior to being re-registered, then you could potentially get it.

If you don't know, once a domain actually expires it's still not open to be re-registered. It has to go through a redemption period where the original owner can still re-register it. Basically it's a second chance in case of forgetfulness.

But as I said, in my experience most expiring domains on Registered Compass usually end up being re-registered. So I spend my time on auction domains or domains that have already expired. Keep in mind that expired domains are possibly in redemption. So you have to see if they are available for just the regular registration. There's a period where it will say it's "Not Yet Free".

Is there a way to filter on those private owner auctions?

I usually just use register compass and filter based on price. Private owner auctions tend to be asking the world for their domains and more likely to be buy now listed (I mean besides the clear outs under $15)

Yes Godaddy has plenty of those. Anyone with a membership can put up a domain on auction. Most only bid on domains and may be unaware of private auctions mixed right in.

Find domains about to expire, just change the domain expiration date.

Needs the footprint tweaked to filter out the Creation Date.
