How does Google spot a fake blog?

Some people are still using Web 2.0 sites and blogs as part of a private blog network. Many of these pages are only updated once or twice and then never receive new content. That could be one signal to Google which says that particular blog is 'fake' as in only being used for backlinking purposes, rather than a legitimate content blog designed for convenience of it's readers. So maybe the point is, to treat your Web 2.0 pages as well as you do your main or money site. Update those pages with regular good content, rather than making them thin sites.

What are some other things that might tip Google off to the fact that a blog or Web 2.0 page is part of a private blog network or link wheel?

How would Google know the last time the blog was logged into, or that on your first addition of content, you hadn't said all you need to say on the subject? Or what if I'm posting with automated feeds? It's just that I have a lot of old web2s that have not been updated with content in years. But all of them seem just fine in terms of power and trust. Almost all have increased in PR over the years too.

Just seems a bit of a reach.

What is a fake blog and why would google care? if a page answers the
searchers question or solves their problem, who cares?

I'm chuckling here because I'm thinking about The Onion right now...
