Redirecting single URL's

I have just been offered a contract to build a new website for a local cricket club.

All of their pages are no less then a PR2 and have a good number of links.

Their site is very old and very poorly managed. Who ever set it up gave the url links like:

www.example.com/section_home.asp?SectionID=2
www.example.com/contact.asp?SectionID=10

Whats the best way to save PR and links?

For example I would like to re-direct - www.example.com/contact.asp?SectionID=10 to www.example.com/contact

Thanks in advance!

They didn't give them the urls. The CMS did.

The best way is to leave everything where it is, create new pages,
no redirects, especially if these are pages indexed already.

There's really nothing wrong with those urls anyway.

    In fact, just the opposite.

domain.com/contact.asp is much better than domain.com/contact

    • May I ask why .asp is better?

They want the old site taken down as its an eye-sore and the CMS is impossible for them to use.

My advice is start from the bottom & work your way up to the most important pages that are already ranked & work in small batches (edit, watch the SERPs, repeat...). Screwing up 301 redirects for an entire site all in one go can drop a site in the SERPs just as fast as Google can find a problem (hours).

You have zero room for error, get it right the first time. Practice on your own test sites.

Another thing is, If you don't have that old text on the new pages it can sometimes drop pages in the SERPs.

Yet another issue, you best have all the internal links pointing from one internal page to the next internal page correct, that can also screw up SERP positions especially since you said the lowest PR was PR2, so that tells me the existing internal links are most likely helping to rank the old pages.

Messing with URLs is a HUGE deal when it comes to SEO.
