For example say you have a product page that has a low chance of gettinga high enough rank for people to see it but it has a well writte meta description do you think google factors that into SEO factor of your site?

In other words is it worth spending time to get meta descriptions looking good on all products even ones that may have a lower chance of being found, etc.?

Thanks

Meta descriptions are definitely factored in and should be keyword optimized. Descriptions also play a role in conversions, as you mentioned, since its the text shown as part of your ad.

Wikipedia doesn't use meta description tags, they also don't have a problem ranking pages.

Not having a meta description tag will show you exactly what on-page text Google is looking at to help rank the page since Google is the one picking the SERP description text.

Meta Descriptions are to tell search engine bots and people what your page is about..Google never use them for ranking, but having no description is more beneficial than wrong or unrelated descriptions..

Matt Cut has recently updated a video about meta description..I think that will be helpful to you..Again meta descriptions are not a ranking factor..but many times sites that use keywords two times in meta descriptions, get the top search rankings..you may notice..
