Natural vs unnatural links

There is a link on one of my forums which one of the members posted in 2010. The owner of that web site now contacted me and said that google complained that it is an unnatural link and is counting against his seo.
If a member of my forum posted a link when somebody asked where they can find certain information, I see that as natural but obviously google does not agree.
If that is an unnatural link, is there any links that can be described as natural and what are they?
I did post a link to the forum post yesterday but then some clever ass deleted my post and accused me of spamming.
