If a website gets penalized will you get a message from google?

Was wondering if you get a message or warning that a site has been penalized if the penalization was automated? Seems that one of my sties was penalized in the last few hours, don't know if it was a manual penalty or auto. Would you get some kind of warning in either case? Lost keyword positioning for about a thousand pages. Possibly cause I added pages to quickly. Seems other smaller sites I own weren't affected that are in the same niche. I Didn't do any link building on the pages. Roughly a thousand pages went from first page to...well I can't even find them lol.
I checked webmaster tools but seen no manual action against the site...but its only been a few hours.
