Okay okay okay I need to bring this topic up.

I hear people always say Avoid Blog commenting, it's spam spam spam.

I know a lot of you guys, as well as myself get blog comments all the time and we just delete it.

But here's the thing....

Let's clarify something. Is Blog commenting useful? In SEO? Commenting with anchor text variations to get a "backlink", I'm damn sure it's not useful.

BUT.....again, after researching for the past months I have seen how blog commenting is beneficial. Some of you may know this.

Let's take the fashion sites/weight loss sites for instance. I noticed I've been approaching a lot of blogs with a lot of followers, strong community, tons of backlinks. And what did they do? They participated non stop. They left blog comments left and right (NOT KNOWING ANYTHING ABOUT SEO). But what did that do? It caused "recognition" to the webmaster/site owner that "Oh hey, this person that left me a blog comment is a fashion blogger." OR "Oh hey, this person is a fitness freak. Let me promote them on my site." Bingo, there's the VALUE of that.

I mean, I get it. Let's say you own some kind of yeast infection site. Or "Insurance pay day loans" site. Leaving a blog comment....will probably get you nothing.

But if you were to own some site with (and I hate using this), "VALUE" that would attract tons of site owners, then I don't see how "blog commenting" can be of any harm. As long as it's done properly.

Does that make any sense? I just hear "Avoid blog commenting. It's bad." How about "Avoid blog commenting" as far as obtaining a backlink ?

Thoughts?

Interesting point of view. I can see the value of it. I am interested to see what others think. Can't say as to whether you are right or wrong.

Let's use this site as an example. Pr 6

Miami day 2 | The Blonde Salad

The blonde salad. This girl I believe generates 5k a month, and gets THOUSANDS of visitors.

Noticed all the fashion bloggers leaving comments promoting their sites? Again they don't know ANYTHING about SEO. They're just linking their site no anchor text whatsoever. They just love to brag about their blogs, and want to be part of the community.

And I know at times, theblondesalad will link one of their blogs on her site just because of same interest, relationship, etc.

I've been seeing this with thousands of other fashion bloggers. Basically they're all helping each other out to some degree.

Another friend of mine, I saw her site. She has a PR 3 with hundreds of valuable links from relevant blogs. I asked her how she got those links? She said "I don't know, all I did was post on Facebook, twitter, instagram and left tons of blog comments every day." And yes, I looked at her backlink profile, and they were contextual links. Again, recognition from bloggers about her site that caused them to naturally talk about her site.

Again, not for SEO value, but to PROMOTE which can LEAD to a backlink and THAT creates the SEO value.
    I'm just saying.

I believe it does. I see it as a form of social networking. It is one way to get people to notice your site and get visitors to your site. It needs to be good info... In fact I have been thanked for the info left on their blog at times.

As far as SEO goes, I don't think it has a lot of clout, and can be harmful if not careful about your anchor text.

I did commenting on high pr pages on like niche blogs and it did help a new site get to a PR 2 this year. However it seems Google is dialing PR down, so PR does not mean what it used to.

    Of course your right GG,
But we have to put it into context a little. How you describe a perfectly legitimate and beneficial way to use blog commenting for traffic, links, branding, and same niche networking. Is a million miles away from what 99.999% of the posters here are discussing or asking about.

Blog comments to them, has no intention of adding any value to anyone's site, or no intention to network with them. They are just making up or auto generating a comment purely based on page authority. And trying to get a link on that page, and nothing more.

Right on point. I forgot where I'm posting this . LOL.

But even then I just felt the need for people to look at it in a different perspective and realize that it's not only "one way" of looking at "online marketing." A lot of people think it's only everything they learn from here (WF), but there's more to it.

Blog commenting itself isn't a bad thing as far as SEO goes so long as the link is relevant & the anchor-text isn't obvious while leaving a legit comment, also make sure the link shows on the Google cache. Blog commenting is usually moderated, which isn't a bad thing for everyone that's leaving real comments, it's only a problem for the link blasters that will take a link from any site on the net. Blog comments can be quality links as far as SEO goes.

You'll also hear things like reciprocal links are bad which is BS If two real niche sites are linking to each other. I have a few reciprocal links that also send me niche traffic, my pages still rank in the SERPs.

The key is don't spam out a link profile.

I also think that the nature of the site/blog has a lot to do with the non-seo, community-like comments, too. In your example of fashion, well, girls like to gab! I doubt you will find that same phenomenon in plumbing blogs.. "Yeah babee, weld that pipe, you go girl!!" :p
