The title says it all. Well most of it anyways.

I am looking for an SEO firm that is good with both big and small e commerce websites.

There are so many services out there that I would like to get some recommendations before I make a decision.

I am looking for a firm that has been in business for a while and has a good track record.

To be honest the SEO industry is a bit of a minefield and e-commerce websites are probably the toughest kind of websites to optimise.

I can't recommend anyone in particular but... with the big firms make sure that they are actually doing the SEO for you and not just offering SEO advice that you have to implement (and charging you the earth for it)... and with the small firms make sure that you can get visible results of what they are actually doing (before you get results from sales).

Before employing any SEO firm I'd want to have a good understanding of how it works so that I can find out exactly what they'll do and compare it with the latest best practice (which is very different from last years best practice!).

In all honesty, if you have your own business, you'll want to deal with local companies. You won't be paying in advance. That isn't how business works.

Research a company, check their testimonials and possibly even contact those testimonials yourself. If you're impressed, get in contact and get them to do work on the basis that, if you see improvements, you'll pay their bill. Working as a freelancer, I only deal with registered companies that actually exist on the street level. That way, I know that when I invoice them, they will pay. I know they'll see results, and I know they'll pay - it's win/win.

Just got back from a #BrightonSEO. I was given room 404 in the hotel I stayed at. Couldn’t find it anywhere!

I have no idea what you are talking about. I know very few professional SEOs that will work without payment. That is exactly how business is done.

The only possible way that would work is If the SEO owns all the backlinks used to rank a clients page. Forget on-page SEO with that type of setup because the client could easily tell the SEO to get lost after services.

      No pay, no play.

Go for websites like freelancer.com, odesk.com - There you can find good professionals to do SEO. But please keep in mind that, there are lots of scammers as well. So, before you offer the project to them, have many questions asked to them and clarify their professionalism and knowledge. Obviously, read there reviews by their previous clients on those freelancing sites.

Have a look at most major SEO firms and you will notice that the packages they offer are actually ongoing, meaning that you should think of the packages they offer as a long-term agreement and you need to make payments every month. Search Google, and find a top company in your city that you can visit their office and negotiate all details. Have a close look at their backgrounds, ask for proofs about previous successful projects they have accomplished for their other clients.
