Local listings (citations) NAP does it matter on which site

We all know that local listings, or in other words citations get picked up by Google and play a decent role in local rankings.

However does the NAP (Name / Address / Telephone number) have to be present on a local directory or does it count no matter where you place it?

How about video sharing sites, image sharing sites, blogs etc etc.

Afaik Google would care less whether it's a local site or not, it just detects the NAP where ever it sees it and gives value to it right?

Anyone ever tested the effectiveness of NAP on global sites?

Here is what I can tell you from some experience in cleaning up messes left behind by others.

Google looks at the quality of the citations in a similar manner they do for link quality. The biggest difference, there is no Disavow Tool for citations. Basically, if you wouldn't want a link on the page, don't place a citation there either.

Local directories tend to carry more weight. I've moved some local listings with under 20 citations in the top directories like Yelp, BOTW, etc.

In other words a citation on a wordpress sub domain is just as useless as a back link from such PR nothing page.

You ever add the NAP of client on your private network sites?

Pretty much so. Your competition in local is usually, but not always, a lot less, so it could move the needle a little bit. There are plenty of great places to get citations from though. I never felt a need to get them from something like that.

I have. But I won't do it for more than one client on the same site. Looks odd to me if you start having a bunch of those pop up on one site.

On the other hand... if you build and maintain your own directories, that is something totally different.

In the US you can find plenty of citation sites yes, but in Canada, Australia, the Netherlands, Denmark and South Africa it becomes a lot thinner and I have quite a few clients there. Now I have to add that most of those clients rank for nation wide keywords so no idea if it's even useful to add citations for them, however it's just another link for some more diversity.

I do have a bunch of local listing sites and web directories, just need to give them some more attention and get more different themes for them.
