Nor does it make sense.

I'd try to be a bit more creative than that.

LOL, man you are missing my question. I wasn't trying to be creative. I was simply asking if having my keywords spread out throughout the title is the same as blatantly stringing them together?

But in a serious note, maybe I shouldn't have used the word "creative" but in all serious, don't focus too much on "how am I going to add this keyword in the title."

But as one of the poster said, OUTSIDE of SEO, you want people to CLICK on the article, which goes to me saying "creative" so that it compels the reader.

If a reader saw your title like the example you gave then who gives a rats s*(@# about what ranking it is if bounce rate is going to be high or if people aren't even going to read it with that title

I get your question. But I'm going a little bit more than just your question if that makes sense.

From an on-site SEO point of view, I would go with "4 steps on how to make pancakes". You could certainly use "The Finest How To Guide On How To Make Fluffy Pancakes"? as the meta description tag to encourage click-throughs.

I do not believe that having the term in the title and url as being over-optimized.

If you had it in the title, description, H1, H2's, image alt text, image file name and repeated it 20 times in the article, then that could be seen as over-optimized

Google's not BS. As long as your content is unique and provide very helpful, informational and much value to the readers, they will count this as well optimize to let them know the well targeted source of information rich content to provide the better user experience to their searchers (I guess so but who know what's the thought behind their system!).

Here's the on-page basics I use for my keyword.
- Page title
- One H tag
- Image alt-text
- One keyword anchor-text
- At least once as plain text someplace in the content
Those positions don't always have to be exact match keywords, keyword variations are fine.

Over optimized web pages is stuff like counting words on the page, look around this forum you'll see knuckleheads talking about junk like keyword density (fail).

The page title having the keywords separated with other text isn't a big deal but you'll need to compensate with other things, maybe stronger links, maybe more internal pages with the exact keyword phrase linking to the page your trying to rank.

It's easier to rank a small group of same subject pages (internal links/pages) than a single page all by itself.

I tried to be more creative with my title once, it definitely improved my ctr in Google SERP. I think Google likes that too. Go with whatever you feel comfortable with. From my experience, I didn't find any evidence to suggest that a longer title ranks lower than a keyword-stuffed, keyword-dense title.
