How can I get the monthly searches for my keyword?

I am trying to get the monthly searches for a few of my keywords. I was told to go on google and do it like this "painter indianapolis"
I was recently told that this is not its done.
Can someone chime in?

    Or you could use a keyword tool like Micro Niche Finder, since you'll need one anyway to do your keyword research.

        Obviously. But if you're going to do keyword research with it, why not just get the search volume from the same place? I don't open up the Google Keyword Planner for anything anymore.

          That's my point, why buy an IM product that's getting it's data from a free source (Adwords API)?

          All I need is search volume (free), I don't need some IM tool to tell me If I can rank a page. You can pretty much bet folks running those types of IM tools pass up decent keywords because the software fed them some bogus stats.
