It's just guessing without the website to analyze but a few things to consider:

Do you have any messages / warnings in Google Webmaster tools?
Do you have a significant drop in links? (can check ahrefs or other tools)
    Was this Search Engine Traffic?
Is the content duplicate, or completely unique?

You don't go from 100k visitors down to 13k visitors without being penalized. No niche drops that much that fast. If you copied content, I suspect someone reported it and google is punishing you by dropping your site from the SERPs.

I am sure everyone is curious though how you were getting 100k visitors per day and did absolutely no link building. That is a lot of traffic.

          Thats a great question.

100k a day is 3 million visits a month. Thats huge.
Congratulations. Most people can't get that kind of traffic without using PPC or other paid ways.

It is simple coil101. Christmas is a niche in which people search to buy different gift items, candies and others related to that memorable day. After it, to drop the traffic of your website is a normal process. Start optimizing it you will get back.

Hey Coil, If you didn't get any message in your webmaster account related to spam then you have no need to worry.

Now you should create some backlinks for your targeted keyword to make your website presence in SERP. And also find the groups and communities in social media sites and share your content with them, this will also help you to increase your site traffic.

I thought it means that his site may also get an algorithmic penalty? (without having the warning message Webmaster Tools)

You need to check for Google Analytics or any other Webmaster tools you use for the incoming traffic changes to find out the passing traffics.

It is quite normal unless, there is warning message in your Google webmaster tool. In the holiday season, like christmas, new year, or in weekends people are more tends to search for shopping online or search for some stuffs like your business. This could lead you sudden rise or drop in traffic.

Coil, you may have lost rankings for some reason or another.

If you havent been tracking your SERP positions, go into the webmastr tools in a couple of days (takes time to update) and see if you have a drop in impressions/clicks.

If you can pm the site I can do some research but I would need google analytics to precisely see if it has been hit by any algorithmic changes.

What kind of linkbuilding have you done?
You should check your links as other people have mentioned, you may even be a victim of negative seo.

Then it was a competitor likely negative seo'ng your website.

Any niche that's getting that much traffic will be a target, especially in an innocent niche like yours.

Time to start cleaning up the links that they built to ruin your rankings.

    Hi coil,

It may be possible that Google update its algorithm or may be possible you're violate the search engine guidelines. One easy way to check are doing spam or breaking guild-lines just simply go your free webmaster account, check their is mail from Google, Like this link are not thematic and good. Just clean that links..

          Maybe, maybe not.

There's not much difference between 1,000 & 3 million unique traffic as far as running a website, besides server/host cost or maybe moderating a forum.

You need to look at the keywords you were ranking for and see which ones you've dropped in the SERPs for. Was the drop 10-20 spots or did it drop out of the SERPs completely? Some keywords/niches see a dramatic drop in traffic for only a movement of 2-5 spots. Do you have new competitors in your niche?

You have to do the analysis, unless you are willing to reveal your site and keywords to someone to do it for you.
