I designed a website for a local painting contractor in Chicagoland area. I was wondering if its a good idea in order for my website to rank higher in Chicagoland area if I backlink to other painting websites in california, new york, texas etc that have similar keywords in them?

If that painting contractor believes that he will be getting jobs in and around these
areas, then sure, go for it, other than that use local media to promote your client.

I think you would do better If you had external links on pages that mentioned the keyword Chicago. The keyword Chicago in the backlink page <title> or <h> tag would be a better quality link IMO. Next, optimize your own internal pages/links for the keywords painting contractor & Chicago.

you can back links but do not target any specific keywords for that you can use Brand name. Links also not to be sitewide or footer links. You can write 1 article and ask him post the website and ask him to use your website url directly.

It is ok but always take care of quality of sites on which you are posting links...

If those are high PR, authoritative websites, it is ok to get links there.

But ideally, you should try to acquire links from places that are going to send you the most targeted and relevant traffic. In the scenario you've given, the best way would be to try to earn as many Chicagoland area backlinks as possible.

But as I see, for your niche that may be quite a challenge.

So, if there are too few local sites you can get links from, focus on building high-quality links with other relevant US-based sites. These links may increase your organic visibility in local SERP.

I think you can do that, but be sure to check on the quality of the websites that you post to. Also make sure you do a little keyword research just so to use the best that will give you targeted traffic and from your specific area.
