I know that it is important to have keywords in the URL. My question is do partial keywords help at all? If I have one of the 2 words in my URL is there any added benefit?

  • Yes !

Any keyword in the URL will help.

I have a similar situation where one of my keyword is in the URL and the other one isn't but it is still bringing me good traffic.

I would have opted for the URL with all keywords inclusive but all such domains are occupied.

  • Yes, you should also have the keywords in every page you make for that domain.

This will help in your Google search results as well.
  • Kind of depends on if your are talking Domain Name vs. Keywords used on page names. Keywords in Domains are very beneficial to a point. I am not a fan of hyphens. As far as keywords in page names /my-page.html there is plenty of evidence to suggest this is still a good practice. It works fine for Wordpress Blogs and I have a whole lot of them that are ranking just fine.

Anything you can do to help the user and the search engines accurately target your site content is beneficial.
  • Don't listen to the first few replies. Use common sense on this one. Partial keywords? If your keyword is "Golf Balls" the keyword "balls" isnt going to help you much, and the keyword "golf" is far too broad to get you any real leverage.

In that case, forget the name and go with something memorable for your visitors. Get the type-in return traffic as its more valuable than the search traffic any day.

Keyword in URL is highly over-rated. People who think its so important are the same people that buy domains like g-o-l-f-balls.com or go-lf-ba-lls.com

Focus on good content, strong inbound links and non-spammy outbound links.

    • They can be useful but not that essential. Google is smart enough to know what your site is about without using keywords in the domain name.
    • Not to mention, once you've driven the visitor to your site, who can remember a domain like g-o-l-f-bal-ls.com

There's so much more than just driving someone to your site.
    • lol.. wtf.. i get your point here but those are not even keywords..no search engine will index those as keywords for golf or balls...
  • Just recently I got visitors from the Google search engine for a new site that had my main keywords in it. I think though that keywords in your URL are not going to help if you have tough competition in your niche
  • just use one of your keyword. 2 keywords are kinda long
  • Using your keyword in the domain is really important for rankings. Now, whether you should use the keywords or something else that it easy to remember depends on what type of site you are making.

If you are making a niche or adsense site, go with the keyword in the domain. .com .net or .org Not so sure about .us I'm trying a couple of .us domains to see if they rank as easily as the others.

    • i don't think any type of domains matters here. Just don't use free web host
  • well yes i agree in some part to have the keyword on url, but its not only the imp its just part of , u do need to creat kind of keywords/ meta/ as well the keyword should be highlight in ur containts
  • yes it help...make it 3 keywords for you to optimize well fr a new site..
  • I'd say getting a domain name with your target keyword is essential. It doesn't matter for the backlinks you are building manually because you are obviously going to use anchor text to post your link. But what about other webmasters who link to your site? They are going to post the link with your URL, not anchor text. By having your keyword in your URL you make sure that that URL link is giving you a keyword targeted backlink. You need to get every edge possible when trying to get to top spot in the SERPs.

This person clearly doesn't know what they are talking about. But that is the beauty of the Forums you get too weed through a whole lot of myth and unsubstantiated claims and make the decisions for yourself.

If your keyword is Golf Balls there is a clear benefit to having the term "Golf" as a Keyword in your domain. It instantly tells the visitor your site is about GOLF.

Do a search for Golf Balls in Google and what do you see? The Top 10 results have repeated use of one or both words with the exception of Titleist. And why do you think that Titleist is ranking for "Golf Balls".

There you go - PROOF not Myth.

    • I think you kind of missed the point.

The fact of having "golf" or "balls" won't significantly change your ranking. The coincidence that these sites have "golf" or "balls" or both is because they also talk about "GOLF" AND "BALLS" on site.

PROOF that it doesn't matter is that TITLEIST.com IS RANKED SECOND.

There is NO GOLF or BALLS in TITLEIST.

It's fine to have keywords in your url, but how about making a URL that someone can remember?
  • Hello,

Yeah, It will help your website ranking in the SERP result and adding two keywords would be best for the new domain. Like this www[dot]keyword1-keyword2[dot]com...

    Thanks

    • Keywords in the URL are important because they influence the way people link to you, not because Google places high importance on URL names in its algorithm. Google does take into account keywords in the URL when matching results to a search, but the effect is virtually negligible and won't help you at all with no links. No links, therefore last place.
  • Keywords in url proven to increase CTR because it implies relevancy.
