Google "Carousel" search results

I work in the vacation industry and recently Google has begun utilizing a black "carousel" bar at the top of search results for queries like "condos in Myrtle Beach". They can be sorted by review ranking, but initially they don't seem to be in any discernible order. Some have lots of reviews, some have titles close to the search inquiry term, etc. Based on our looking into it, we think geography has a bit to do with it, but tough to say. Does anyone have any insight into this?

  Having trouble posting screenshot, but here's a link as an example. Black bar at the top. # of reviews and overall rating varies.
  
  Also it's strange how the query must be phrased to get the carousel results. I don't get them for "myrtle beach condos" or "condo in myrtle beach", but "condo at myrtle beach" gets them.

I don't work in any of the niches were carousel results apply but I remember readng this study awhile back, maybe helpful:
