I just registered a domain name, I checked its history via majestic seo. Theres about 11 backlinks all from a podcastexchange.org.....along with a landing page on the actual site that was permalinked as: hxxp://(thedomainname).com/legal.aspx

Are these bad signs?

This is not a good sign. It is much better to have backlinks from different websites instead of one website. But 11 backlinks are not that much. If you have mass amount of backlinks from the same site , it can harm your site.

It's recommend to get backlinks from other sites as well.

I believe with backlinks you want quality links, in various places. This helps with building authority too! What you're trying to avoid is spammy backlinks that will then leave you with a manual penalty and believe me, you don't want this.

        Did you actually check podcastexchange.org?

Anyone who says too many links from one site are bad is just
not dealing with reality. Nobody here with hundreds of posts
would even think about having a sig link.

I suppose the logic would be that one could join the forum, do
5 posts, sig link it, then move to another forum.

signup to a webmaster tools account for the domain, this will give you a good insite, then any bad links just submit a disavow.

These are historical backlinks that are only viewable under historical searches. I am just asking if these old backlinks will hurt my domain. I dont want to build a site around a domain with a penalty from the past

        Then disavow them.

I don't think it's too much of an issue.

You can always disavow them, and even Google has stated you can contact them (i forget how) and explain that you are a new domain owner.

11 backlinks from one site is no big deal. A site owner can't control who backlinks to his site. Yes, you can try to get them removed or disavow them, but I'd put more focus on working to get good backlinks so the bad backlinks are "absorbed" and become meaningless (and even if you had no "bad" backlinks you of course want to focus on generating good backlinks so do that anyway).
