Could phrasal EMD make it difficult to rank with the single word in the phrase?

Hi,
I know EMD does not work wonders (anymore) by itself but in my experience it works well if the website has good quality content.

So if your domain was seoservices.com and it had good content, it is (at least a bit) easier to rank with "seo services."

However, I also found (or I feel) that although it would make it easier to rank with that exact phrase, it actually makes it difficult to rank with the single word in the phrase ("seo" in this example) even if you try to optimize with "seo" as well.

(Of course "seo" is a very competitive keyword but it is just an example.)

Do you also find it is the case? Or it has nothing to do with EMD?
Another example would be "healheadache.com(made up)." It could get #1 with "heal headache" easier than other domains, but it could be more difficult to rank even within #100 with "headache" even if the page is optimized for "headache" as well. I see many websites like this.

So my question would be should I avoid (phrasal) EMD if I wanted to rank with the single word in the phrase as well? Or again it has nothing to do with EMD?

Thanks

Even though an EMD does not give a boost as it did before, it does still have some value.

However I disagree and have not found just because you have it in the name that it is tougher to rank the "short tail" version of the word, and in fact if you had a domain like seoservices.com it will probably be slightly easier to rank the word "seo" than if you didn't have it in the name at all.
