Is backlinking through blog comments still viable?

I understand previously it was a lot easier with blog comments needing validation from the blog owner but nowadays almost every blog requires the blog itself to validate your comment so its rather difficult to be posting your comments with your link attached without them thinking you're trying to spam.

What are some other viable ways to backlink? I'm having a hard time trying to think of anything else, really.

No, it's not. You just need to post something worth keeping on the blog, and not random gibberish.

Links in signature will not help your SEO. Not on this site, and not on any other forum.
Who told me this? An ex Google web spam engineer.

    What's your excuse?

I'm actually skimming through blog posts and giving a related comment about the article/post, then just making a reference with something similar on my site. Is this the most efficient way to go in terms of backlinking?

It still has it's place in SEO, but it's value has gone down significantly.

From the blog owner's point of view you need to provide value for that kind of link to stand. It's probably easier to let a comment pass if there's no obvious link in the comment text.

Yes, it is still viable..If you are a reglar commentor and always comment some worthy words, then definitely people will visit your site through your link..Traffic and back link..two major factors come together..

Yes you can use it, but you have to put the work in first to create solid general comments on your niche (or better yet have them created) and spun properly. Then you can drip them slowly via Scrapebox or another backlinking tool. But they should be used sparingly. You still want link diversity so they do still have a place in your repertoire.

You could try to create your own private blog network

Forums such as this one with do follow links. Just put a link to your blogs in your signature. The backlinks add up fast if you post a lot.

Automated commenting? Not unless you're incorporating them with a ton of other types of links & going for volume. (Fast but short-term rankings.)

One of my favorite traffic sources is still blog commenting. The traffic coming over from your comment is guaranteed to be extremely targeted. If you're leaving good (manual) posts on popular blogs you can generate some nice traffic. I wouldn't worry too much about approval rates. You'll get plenty of your comments approved as long as they're on-topic and add to the post.
