EMD and URL anchor text backlink (considered exact match anchor?)

Hi there,

I have an EMD that I have not used yet. I was going to make a website with it, and I was talking with an SEO specialist I know (who works for an SEO company) about it.

He said, an EMD still works well as long as there are good content and numbers of pages, but it is difficult to keep good ranking because it is difficult to *adjust* the anchor texts of the backlinks it gets.

What he means is that since the keyword is in the URL, if you get baclinks with URL anchor text, Google considers them as exact match anchor texts, and every time there is an update with Google, EMD sites are more affected by it - meaning when Google change "how much exact match anchor text backlinks is best (or appropriate)," these EMD sites are more vulnerable because they tend to have more "exact match" anchor backlinks. They may not be penalized, but tend to go ups an downs more than no EMD sites.

He recommended not to use an EMD for that reason.

Do you agree with what he says?

Thanks

Hard to answer that question whout seeing the URL, is it a cheesy EMD?

    Example:
    • hxxp://low-cost-vacations-hawaii.com

...or is it a branded EMD?

    Example:
    • hxxp://cars.com

Are your link sources niche relevant?

Is your on-page SEO keyword stuffed with the same keyword as the EMD?

      Thank you Yukon.
I actually have 2 of them and they are both actually Japanese and it's hard to translate these words to English, but one is like "cars.com" and the other is like "studymath.com" So I would say they are not cheesy.

The guy told me about it when I mentioned about the "cars.com" equivalent., and he said it's his general experience from doing SEO for many sites.

      Thank you.

I'd say avoid him and his seo company like the plague.
He's clueless about anything google ever said (or didn't) about
    anchor text.

Ditto about EMDs. That guy was really making up stuff as he went along...

Japanese? And you are worrying about EMD and anchor text?!

We do have EMDs in Japanese and it is still VERY effective because google seems not to have introduced the EMD updates completely.(I hope you know we can use the Japanese letters/texts in a domain name - either just the Japanese or mixed with English letters.)

Also I don't get into detail but he has had many good results.

As you have EMD sites, if you have good content and obviously you can rank your website in less time. But it's difficult to maintain that ranking. But you're really good at you're doing (Following Google SEO guidelines) then i don't think it will harm your website.

I'll be honest. I'm not a fan of EMD, but I still see them ranking well here and there. The most common thing among them all is they have all good/natural links from quality pages.

"numbers of pages" is completely irrelevant. There's no such thing. Let's say you have 5 pages of content. All the content is good, it has links, it has social shares. Now, you don't "rank", just because you don't have enough content? Wrong...

I have couple of niche sites that target 30k+ keywords. They all have no more than 10-15 pages of real, juicy content.. and that's it. There's no point to pump out blog posts/articles just to gain more indexed pages. Google doesn't care about it.

It's easier to receive an anchor penalty when using a keyword rich EMD so I avoid them.

There's also a risk that you buy a pre-used EMD that already received a penalty in the past.

Thank you. This is the kind of an opinion I wanted to hear!

I haven't looked but I'm sure cars.com has a bunch of exact match anchor-text while still ranking pages. Focus on quality links & you should be ok, assumes your own pages aren't keyword stuffed with the same text as the EMD.

Sure, go EMD domain, but then use less of the main keyword in your anchor text. it's a simple balancing of the equation. if you decide to go non EMD then you'll need more of your money keyword in your anchor text
