PR 3 Site went from page 1 to page...

22! I know you probably have heard this a gazillion times before but I'm really worried... and pissed off. I have a PR3 site which was finally starting to pick up. I've been consistently building links to it over the past few months and not going over the top. I probably just build 1 to 2 links a day.

The site was doing great and was moving up the serps and its PR was increasing. I wasn't really adding content to it and one day I decided to add a page and I submitted a site map to Google. The next day my site was gone and now it shows up on page 22 with quotes ... before it was on page 1 with no quotes. I've checked google webmasters tool and no errors and the site is still PR 3 (not greyed out or anything).

Is this just one of those Google dances. Please help

Nobody can answer that for sure, but most likely a google dance. As long as you didn't do something wild, i'm sure you'll be fine in the serps.

Thanks for the quick reply. I know that probably no one can answer for sure but it's like seeing your life's work go to waste. I was doing great in terms of ranking (and getting some sales) and was constantly increasing... from page 6,5,4,3,2 then page 1 for about a day and then poof!!!!!

I hope you are right and at least my PR is still there so hopefully it will come back

Your toolbar PR is much much different then actual PR. Toolbar PR is just for show at this point.

Having said that, what a week or 2 and watch your rankings. If you stay where you're at then there is definitely something wrong. Google does make algorithmic changes quite often, so it might be them shifting the SERPs around to see if new pages getting better click-thur's. I've seen them do that and then change everything back on Mondays.

I agree most likely the google dance off. They most likely reshuffled a bit when you added content.

If i was you i would forget about using PR as an indicator , one of my sites done the same thing last month, it dropped out for 14 days and i started to worry after 4 or 5 , i decided stop everything and see if it bounched back and it did, of course that might not be the case but after 2 weeks i would start to worry, Google's a fickle beast

Google has it's own algorithm, all the SEO just guess on the basis of day to day experience. You can't guess exactly about the PR upgradation or content updation role in optimizing the site.

You say stop everything... do you think I should stop the link building too?

Well, I really don't have a theme other then it is a review site. I basically set up a site that reviews various online products (mainly clickbank). I have individual pages for various products such as sitstayfetch, rocket spanish, jamorama, muscle gaining secrets etc.

I didn't really add any pages for a few months and then a few days ago I added chopper tattoo and submitted a sitemap. Everything is good to go from google webmasters. I guess I'll keep doing what I'm doing now and see what happens.

When do you think is the time to give up on the site and count my losses.

I'm glad to say that my site has reappeared again in the first pages of google. So the site was dropped for about a week! Having said that lesson learned and I will probably start to diversify just in case it happens more permanently next time.

Good to see things are working out for you again...I couldn't figure out what the problem was since everything you were doing seemed fine. Do you know why it appeared in "quotes" that time? Is it still in quotes on the first page?

Well, my site reappeared for a couple of days and just disappeared again. I'm just going to assume that it the google dance for now. It just gave me some more motivation that it showed up again for a few days!

I have always been paranoid when that happens to me but over the last couple of volatile years, I have realized that it is usually nothing to worry about and thinks come back. The thing is just not to panic and go changing anything just yet.

No ads whatsoever! Simply content and lots of it. Either way I'm less anxious now then I was last week

glad to hear all is rightly back in place. generally, as long as you are focused on producing quality content for your site, you shouldn't have to worry too much about losing rank during a google dance. good luck!

Yea my site has been doing some crazy things lately. Even the PR is fluctuating. My homepage was a PR 3 now PR0. Some of my inner pages increased their PR while some fell. Just this morning one of my internal pages was a PR4 now unranked!!!!

I'll wait and see ... and cross my fingers

I'm sure your site will reappear soon.

But remember to keep these things in proportion - all we are talking about is your sites position in response to a specific search query. Your site has not gone or disappeared, it's not been removed from their index, it's simply not appearing in the same position for that query at the moment.

Google varies the results it gives based on many factors and there is no definitive single position for any query.

Thank everyone for all the support

My site keeps on disappearing for a couple of weeks and then reappearing for a few days in the same position it was before. I'll keep everyone posted on what's going on.

So my site showed back up today and stronger than it was before for some keywords and weaker for others. I'm beginning to see a pattern. I was led to believe that google will index you for all the terms in your anchor text but I'm beginning to see that it will index you for the whole phrase in your anchor.

For example, if I'm link building, and I use sitstayfetch review as my anchor text, my previous assumption is that google will give me good ratings for both sitstayfetch review and sitstayfetch. While this maybe true, what I'm seeing is that google will give me much better SERP ranking for my anchor text phrase (sitstayfetch review).

I noticed that for the recent months Google Paherank has been working weirdly.
For some sites it dropped though the traffic itself from Google grew up. Other site's PR got higher but the traffic from Google got smaller.
So, I don't see direct correlation between PR and traffic now. Something strange happens out there...

Page Rank has been the weird for my site. I'll have PR4 on one of my pages and then it drops to 0 for like a week and then comes back to a 4! Other pages have had some regular variations as well. And you are so right about the correlation between PR and traffic. I just like seeing it as it tells me that google is picking up my backlinks.

I meet the same question like you,one of my site now is #9 in google with a keyword, but yesterday it is 18,and the day before yesterday it is 8.and I notice the google position I get directly through google web search is diffrent from I get it through some SEO tools.the position geting from the third tools seems more precise, bucause these third SEO tools check lots of google datacenter not like direct search only access one datacenter.
I advice next time you check your google position, you had better use some SEO tools, there are lots of free software in internet, you can easily get them.
