I'm sure everyone will say the Google Keyword Planner . . . but you really should check out SpyFu - even the free version is super powerful and allows you to literally steal top successful keywords and even entire campaigns. Afterall only a total idiot would be paying month after month for keywords if they were just loosing money. This will point you to some good niches.

Another unorthadox way to spy on competition is to use Flippa - find a related website for sale and look at the metrics, keywords and traffic stats. This is a great way to point yourself in the right direction.

If you do choose a niche based on a keyword try to make sure they are desperate or fanatical buyers.

Can you expound on "desparate" or "fanatical buyers"? do you mean, that if you mean to gear a business around a niche, purely based on research, you should pick one that has an easy funnel and guaranteed monetization through sales, as opposed to focusing on the CPC?

I highly recommend you look into purchasing the KW research tool called "market samurai". Before buying, look into Pat Flynn from smartpassiveincome.com (not an aff link) detailed video explanation about how to use it.

Market Samurai's drawback is its competition level figures. This is crucial when picking out a niche.

What do you mean? Which data does it give that's inaccurate?

You can start with brainstorming first, discuss with your group the different word phrase that you customers might used to look for your product or service. You could spy on your competitors keywords and see which one are profitable. Also you could use keyword tools like Google Keyword Planner.

Market Samurai was good for the time I used it. It's customer base has been rocked by a few algorithm changes, I remember the "Death of Market Samurai?" emails well, but it is an awesome tool.

If you didn't want to lay down the cash you can always use the various tools offered by google, seomoz, majestic seo etc.

Google changed to the keyword planner from the arguably better keyword tool, which I think the last time I checked you can still access in your google adsense and/or adwords account, in the dashboard there is an option for classic tools or something like that.

Google trends, even though limited, can help you see some interesting stats on certain keywords.

Sometimes you can operate in reverse and use scrapebox to come up with keywords that you can easily get very relevant and valuable .edu and high PR backlinks to by doing some link research.

SpyFu, Market Samurai are all good.

I'm going to take a different tack for a moment and ask if you've started with your "who" and got that nailed down?

Easy to run into keyword land too early to find traffic before knowing who you want to serve and what their needs are.

That's the funny thing with keywords...sometimes the best tools in the world will find you a phrase that'll bring in thousands of visitors but if it isn't the right phrase or you've got the wrong stuff for that market you're still in trouble.

If you've got "who" nailed then sweet...if not start in the niche forums, Amazon books, Dummies Guides and see what words and phrases they're already using and then turn to keyword tools to find ways in from there.

      Hi Egarners,

There is some great info in here. Yes it is important to target market by asking the questions WHO, WHAT WHERE and HOW.

I love Keyword Research because more than simply doing it to be mechanical, your customers are real people, and so those keywords are actually what they are typing in to Google.

Now those other tools people recommended here are good but I have not heard any one really share about how to use the Keyword Planner to determine your market demand.

      And that is key...

Thanks John for reading my mind and focusing on my needs for identifying the 'who, what, where and how that addresses my specific niche. My guess is my main niche is 'movies as I am trying to sell/rent movies through Amazon.

I see in another thread here at warrior that most here think that google planner 'sucks' as compared to the older google adsense keyword tool. What do you think?

Anyway, other niches of interest to me are health foods, natural curing and muscle toning.

That's an interesting niche to focus on. How are the profit margins like? i promoted a feature films on ekra but moved on when the commission payout was too low!

For keyword research I use a bunch of things. Google keyword planner, ubersuggest.com, alexa.com, 7search keyword tool, spyfu - free version.

If you've already got running ppc campaigns on google adwords, you can go to 'details' next to the keyword tab, click on 'All' under search terms and you can see what people are typing in for your ad to be shown. There's a bunch of keywords I usually pick up from here.

I actually just wrote a post on this on the home page of my blog in my sig, you can check it out if you want!

            Good luck!

Go to the Keyword Planner and type in movies. Tell me what you see. I will show you a way to find Hidden Keywords that Google Keyword Planner does not reveal. IF you want I will demonstrate it right here.

Thanks John... I see a plethora of keywords in the main listings..." movies, movie theaters, new movies, free movies online, etc.... a long list." If we aren't breaking warrior rules I would love to see it demonstrated.

Doesn't Google Keyword Planner only give the number of monthly exact searches by people logged into their G accounts where the old G keyword tool gave the number of all searches regardless of whether or not people had a G account?

If I am right, the Google numbers are significantly less than the actual search numbers.

I don't get too hung up on Keyword Planner numbers. The numbers are a cross section of actual traffic that is being generated on many markets. All keywords follow a specific pattern. And it is the pattern I care about most. I look for short phrase keyword with a lot of traffic because I know there will be many long tail phrases that I can grab and use for my content publishing.

It is a different story with local marketing. But there still is a pattern. I know in every City / State what the main keywords are going to be that people search on in those local markets. I know the numbers are going to be low. But for an attorney who only needs a few clients to pay the expense of advertising with me, then it does not matter. For a global marketer, the numbers should be much higher.

And if you are going for long tail phrases, go for about 100-200 to completely dominate that niche. I hope that helps.

You're welcome. ok, let's take a look at what came up on the Keyword Planner. Obviously, you could go after all these keywords if you are using Google Adwords and want to bid on keywords.

I want show you a different way of thinking about keywords that is not so mechanical. Because after all, keywords are what people are typing in to Google and every person has a picture in their mind of the keywords / information they are looking for.

So ask your self, what are people looking for from your list? And what keywords match those interests. For example, your site has Movie Trailers.

Here's what I do when I want to crack open a niche. I find every single keyword from A to Z using the root keywords and then building a list of branches or long tail keywords.

      movie trailer after earth
      movie trailer all is lost
      movie trailer american hustle
      movie trailer api
      movie trailer app
      movie trailer apple
      movie trailer august osage county
      movie trailer bad grandpa
      movie trailer bad words
      movie trailer baggage claim
      movie trailer before midnight
      movie trailer belle
      movie trailer best man holiday
      movie trailer black nativity
      movie trailer blue jasmine
      movie trailer book thief
      movie trailer box
      movie trailer captain america
      movie trailer captain phillips
      movie trailer carrie
      movie trailer catching fire

or let's say you wanted to target a specific movie like the Legend of Hercules...

      legend of hercules actor
      legend of hercules actor 2013
      legend of hercules and antaeus
legend of hercules and antaeus fahrenheit-451
legend of hercules and antaeus in fahrenheit 451
legend of hercules and antaeus summary
      legend of hercules and medusa
      legend of hercules ares
      legend of hercules budget
      legend of hercules cast
      legend of hercules cast 2014
      legend of hercules cast movie
      legend of hercules cave
      legend of hercules characters, etc....

These are some of the variations from A to Z but what do they all have in common. Thy all have a root keywords and the branches form all the variations off of the root. This is what every business must do in 2014 if you want to dominate any niche. Find all the long tail keywords starting with a root, and then you can become an Authority on any subject.

Wow. Now this is stuff that I can get my head around. I never looked at keywords in this depth, but it makes all the sense in the world.

The biggest revalation to me is that hundreds of extemely targeted keywords getting a few hundred views a month each would be of more value than the general root keyword that gets thousands....... ie: 100'ds times 100'ds = 10'000'ds.

One question.... where does one find the a to z keyword phrases? I,m not finding that with the google planner or I am missing something.

No way would I base the next few months/years work on a $5 gig from a a guy that could care less about my site. That stuff is $5 for a reason.

I've found it difficult to get my head around blogging because of the content needed to become an authority site. Really don't have the time to post article after article of original content.

Maybe I'm just lazy, but this really dampens my enthusiasm.

Hmmm... Well they don't call this a Warrior forum for nothing, right? It helps if you are passionate abut the niche you are targeting. Now here is what you must do in 2014 to make your life easier. Once you target the right keywords, you must AUTOMATE. Yes, posting a lot of content takes time but check out the plug-in for WordPress that allows you to auto-post to every social network. So you post once, then the plug-in distributes automatically to the top 20 social networks. This will save you time. You got to get into the flow of what is trending. That's why keywords are so critical but not just any keywords. Instant message me and I will build you a long tail keyword list that will literally make you an Authority site with a powerful game plan that is both efficient and effective. You can even rank on Google Page 1 for dozens of keyword phrases rather than just one.
