Do you think it's worth paying 5-15 bucks to remove backlinks from places like directories?

For example say you can disavow 200 links and get 5-15 links removed for it do you think its worth paying?

Thanks

Personally, I probably wouldn't pay to get links removed. If the owner of a site is requesting payment, then I would simply inform them that you will be submitting their domain within your disavow file, unless they are prepared to remove for free.

You can also add comments to the disavow file. I would take the opportunity there to inform Google of the fact that a particular site owner is requesting payment for removals.

You better be careful who you go around making threats like that too.

I wasn't presenting it as a threat: simply a statement of fact. They can choose to charge for link removal. I'm equally able to include their domain within a disavow file, if I believe the link to be of low quality.

I get your point if it is a spammy directory or website that scraped your data. However, if it is a link you placed yourself (or whoever you hired as an SEO placed), they have every right to charge to have the link removed. You are taking up their time to fix a mess you created.

Like I said, be careful how you word that. You go around telling webmasters to remove your link or else... well, you might just tick off the wrong person and end up with 50,000 porn links pointing at your site the next day.

I'm not sure if it would be better to resubmit a disavow file to add those comments or not tho. If I did I would definitely call out some of the sites that do that though.

The thing about e-mailing the owners are that they are kind of shady, who knows if they might retaliate and start adding links to other sites so I think it might be best to ignore them.

I contacted many webmaster to remove my links and about 30% asked for money. I simply ignored them and submit my dis vow file with comments that webmaster asked for money. My penalty was removed recently.

That disavow tool has to be an inside joke over at Googleplex.

The tool is nothing more than a means to crowdsource crappy sites like that OP is discussing. Lame, repurposed phpLD directories that are nothing more than a means of scamming money from webmasters to remove their links.

This is the use case of the disavow tool for links and domains that are charging a removal fee. Screw those directories and submit them right away. Don't pay a nickle to them. By paying them you're keeping their crappy directory live. If nobody pays them then there's no incentive to keep that garbage alive.

However don't expect a miracle from the disavow tool, it doesn't actually disavow links.

So long as Google allows for exploits of their search algorithm, somebody is going to do it, whether that be phpLD directories or something else. First people paid to get crappy links. Now people pay to remove crappy links. We even have been installing a mod where people click a link to pay and remove. We write the software and plenty of good folks use phpLD, but in a similar way, Wordpress can't force people to make ethical blogs.

Google has a history of mining directories to build their search database in the first place.

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.

Pardon my ignorance Yukon, but why is disavow considered a joke now? Does it no longer work as intended to remove low quality/unwanted links from your website?

I bought a second domain in case starting a new domain looks like the better option. Time will tell if disavowing is effective for the site or not. If it turns out disavowing doesn't work for the site then we may need to start on a new one and work on quality seo.

I wouldn't count on it. I have not heard of success story with disavow yet.

You should do all you can to get the links removed.

Why you are paying to remove links i guess you could do that yourself just use the Google Webmaster Tool and Disawov them !! Look do it like first donwload all the links and analyze them make sure it is not spammy filtered out the spammy link and contact the webmaster of the page to remove that link and if you're ended up with no response disawov them !!

Yeah, I'mn ot paying to remove anymore, I did for a few five dollar ones but that's it. One directory person emailed me a third time asking for $15 to remove a link, what a spammer, I'm just ignoring the person.

I sent in over 200 links and a fair amount of domains to disavow as well. Time will tell if that helps the rankings for the site. I purchased a new domain name as well which can be used depending on how disavow goes.

I realized we probably have email addresses for old customers so if we switched domains we could send out a mass e-mail informing everyone of the change.

I think I may give it around a month or two to see if any change happens from it. Maybe also try to build up the new domain somehow, maybe make a wordpress blog for it something to give it some link juice.

Ultimately, it is up to you to decide if paying a fee to remove the link is worth it. Or if one of the alternatives are better for you.

But I wouldn't advise you to pay for getting your links removed.

There are always alternatives. For example, you can disavow all links that come from a particular spammy directory with the Google's Tool, or you can even threaten a directory owner to sue.

Some times it will be useful to use that service. Because your bad links will be removed. And your ranking will be increased.
