I guarantee you there's a better way to get relevant Wikipedia links that just about nobody does, and with keyword anchor-text & no links deleted (100% success rate on links from a few years ago). Chasing down those dead links on the article pages will be moderated, you can bet on that.

Keywordspy & Spyfu have been around for years, copying successful PPC campaign ideas & ad copy is nothing new. That's the only reason those two sites exist. Check those two sites out If that's what your interested in, it will speed up the process. Manually sifting through Google SERPs would take too long & you would never know the ad/copy history on live SERP pages. If you see an ad/copy on Keywordspy & Spyfu that has months/years of live ads, it's most likely successful. Once you find some ads with a long history, then go to the live Google SERPs & double check that they're still running the same ad copy.

Sorry, that's far from being a great tip, it's basic SEO, it's what everyone does when they're trying to rank a page.

C'mon, moz has no idea what authority is. Might as well be trusting something like Traffic Travis for pushing buttons.

    That's all I read.

That expert roundup tip is one huge link magnet.

The product review one is also great but pretty costly, impossible to include that in my services.

Not so crazy about the Reddit one, if you build some review site then you can just load all your keywords + model numbers in Adwords and request the search volume there.

    • Ah yes! I had a feeling you wouldn't like this... Probably because you didn't write it, so you need to slate it to keep up with your image of being a "Guru"

I can see through you............................................... ...............

  • I don't think that the purpose of the technique is to get links on Wikipedia though.

I for one think that it was a great write up though massive outting lol

He was talking about dead links on Wikepedia. That will be moderated.

I know he said you/we could build the one link but he's still suggesting it to people that don't know anything about Wikipedia links. I'm sure most will try & will build that one link. Repeat...

I think most people look at Wikipedia links from a BH POV, instead of actually posting something useful. Not you, just most link builders in general.

  • There is an enormous amount of software out there now, most of it is a complete waste of time in my opinion. People seem to be making a lot of money out of making folk think that they need the software in order for them to rank highly. The only piece of software that I value is Rankerizer as it tells me exactly what position I reside at on the search engine. It doesn't give me any suggestions on keywords, it just helps me understand which keywords do well. Having said that, if you have a look at Google analytics, it's quite surprising the sort of things people type into Google and find your website. If you truly know your product then do you really need a keyword research tool? If I am selling a red Harrington jacket then there aren't really many other words that you can use if this is what people are looking for.

KW research tools are more helpful for people that want to push out sites that they don't care about, like me

However 99 out of 100 KW research tools give out such poor results that it's hardly worth to look at them.

Mostly I just source keywords through scrapebox when I want to build a site around razors or something, then I can later on run them through Adwords to get the search volume and then I'll just pick the ones with the highest amount of searches and pass that on to my writers.

Better build a site that's optimized for 100k exact searches instead of half of it right, so in that sense it's useful.

    • If the tool is giving you search volume for keywords, then it's useful. Like Google's keyword planner.

Like you say, if you write an article about a specific topic, then instinctively you're going to know a good keyword or two to target. But as you kind of mentioned, people can search for what you'd consider a lot of unusual things, or word their searches in ways you wouldn't think are intuitive.

If you use the tool and start with "red Harrington jacket" and get suggestions based on that, you might find related keywords that have high or decent search volume. Maybe "buy red Harrington jacket" has a lot searches, so you'll want to make sure your post isn't just informative but also talks about where/when/why to buy. Maybe you'll find that "blue Harrington jacket" is getting 10 times the searches as red, so you'll know to start stocking the blue version of the jacket (and to write a post with the emphasis on blue). That kind of thing.

  • Thanks Brian! I read some of your tips and I really liked number 20. Find Niche-Specific Link Building Opportunities Using Flippa it's like ebay for websites. And number 21. Use Facebook Ads for Keyword Research.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • I am reading your post and I honestly can say that I am learning some stuff, I have been doing this for a while and to me is refreshing to read this tuype of posts, instead of some ego-war-chest-beating discussion, thanks for it I am going to apply the one about Wikipedia.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • Some people are missing this one, and it's something I've been planning when I build my authority site this year. This is an absolute golden nugget for linkbaiting. And I kind of wish Brian didn't share this gem so publicly.

    19. Use Expert Roundups to Generate Links and Social Shares on Autopilot

Playing up to peoples ego's, but In a very easy to comply way for them (Just 50 words), It's pure BAUS linkbait. What egotistic expert would stop writing at just 50 words?, Probably zero.

    Senator...Senator...A few words please........"F**K YOU"
  • I never realised how much Reddit & StumbleUpon get used until I was spending some time using "real-time" in Google analytics. Somebody had obviously started a conversation about euthanising aquarium fish and because that particular article ranks highly on Google, they link to it in the Reddit conversation. I must have had 500 hits from one link in one article in one-day.
  • More Trusted Links vs. More Juicy Links – When & What Do You Need?
  • Thanks for sharing. I have always loved Brian's tips. He has to be one of the most knowledgeable person in SEO field and also one of its most innovative. The most refreshing thing about him is his lack of ego and his approachability which stands in contrast to condescending diatribes of self-anointed SEO experts on almost every SEO forum who are ever ready to pounce on ignoramuses like us.
