Why Bother Backlinking Articles?

Another question from a few rounds of beer the other night with some IM'ers. Would love to hear y'all's opinion.

What is the purpose of backlinking articles (say Ezine) as opposed to spending that effort backlinking your own site/blog? Wouldn't it make more sense to get ranking on your own site as opposed to Ezine where the CTR may not cause a visit to your home/sales page?

More to the point, what is the purpose of getting good ranking for an Ezine article?

I have my own take on this - but I'd love to hear what some other warriors have to say in case I'm completely off base with my assumptions.

  • You can get an article ranked faster than a new site. Plus, while you are in the process of backlinking your article you can do your sites at the same time. That's what I normally do. Besides, an article is pretty much just a web page that happens to be part of an already established high PR site.

    • I agree, and in addition to that it never hurts to link to a site that in turn links to your site. Pump up the link juice.

      A lot of people make Hub Pages and Squidoo lenses to link to there main money sites and also build backlinks to their hubs and lenses, building backlinks to an article is kind of the same idea.

      But it's mostly like Bakai said, it's easier to get an EZA article ranked than a page on a relatively new site. I like to get my articles ranking in the search engines and bringing steady traffic and once that happens I turn all of my backlinking efforts to my own sites exclusively.

  • I reckon...for every link thrown at Ezine...throw 5 at your own site.

    Ezine gives you quick rankings...but your site closes the deal.

  • I love the strategy of using Angela's List for high PR link to the article. It gives an article which is already on a high PR site (i.e. goarticles.com) some high PR juice, so it'll rank more quickly and higher than a blog post. Then, the article with the extra juice points to your blog post and eventually ranks that. And as someone said earlier..do it all. As always, be sure to bookmark and ping everything.

    • OMG you are missing some serious link juice. You should always focus using most of your articles on your sites or domains in your own control.

      I learned a very valuable lesson the last two weeks about articles and backlinks from them. It cost me about 20 bucks a day .... not much but a lesson with a price tag.

      Hosting on free sites who feel your content is not worthy resulted in having the content removed until review. What is even more interesting even though technically the page is still up in the top result of google but is now blank ... yep they keep the link alive but your content is gone it still is ranking well.

      The only reason I figure it is still in that top spot is because of the hundreds of article backlinks pointing to it. Not to mention other domains pointing to it for those keywords.

      What have I learned?

      Top article ranking sites can give a lot of juice quick. Ezine Articles, Goarticles and a few others.

      Even if the article sites have a pr0,1, or 2 they will just juice up the domain its pointing to over time. Time being weeks or months.

      If you find a good product seriously consider developing your own site on your own domain and avoid using free services where you can create free pages, blogs or sites ... or it will bite you.

  • Well, From The Training I Have Received, the idea is to use the ranking of Ezine...not my site...use the high---very high ranking of Ezine Articles and associating a link in your article to your site.

    Because Ezine is so highly ranked, you get high SEO placement...if you are trained to do this correctly, you know what I mean...?

    Ezine is much bigger than maybe you are. They are already on the Top Search Engine Optimization List--and when you get your article published, you are using not your article's expert writing skills, but Ezine's expert SEO rankings.

    So, when you add backlinks to your site, from Ezines, Google e.g.) gives you higer rankings.

    SEO is the first keyword I believe is important here, and the second is Ranking.
  • In a nutshell it's easier for a beginner because they don't have to create their own site, so no domains, no hosting, no HTML, no Wordpress and there's usually less SEO effort involved (no on page stuff other than keyword density of articles) and less backlinks due to the authority domain.

    Long term though it's a terrible plan to be building up articles on someone else's site when for a bit of extra time and effort they could be on your own.
  • Another part about using Ezine's Ranking Position as opposed to your site: You get a double dose of exposure when you backlink to your article (with its top SEO placement via good ol' ezine)--but also, when you place your links in the article, your SEO placement goes up due to your popularity.

    Number one reason for your popularity being the SEO placement of Ezine, and utilizing its popularity to send people to your site with a link in your article gets you some pretty high traffic, right? That traffic equals higher rankings, more people, more sales.

  • i don't intend to rank on ezine article. A good article that was being approved and read by people is what I'm happy about

    • A good article approved by EZA will be read by people for a couple of days and then fade away. If you did get your article ranked it would be a long term source of continuous traffic for you.
