Being a newbie I have heard that press releases can increase SEO by some and by others that it has little to no affect. Does anyone have any thought on this?

  • it depends on many factors. If you have a link embedded inside the body of your press release you can have a link juice. If the content is informative it can also drive traffic to your site.
  • There is no SEO benefit. Google knows it's a press release and thus not a natural link.
  • Yes there is a benefit but only because it helps in "naturalizing" your link profile. A Press Release can also rank itself as a "parasite" property.

    • It all depends on a number of things:

      Quality of writing
Is it a link-stuffed piece of garbage, or a well-crafted piece with natural linking and solid information that will help its readers? The latter will always produce better SEO benefits.

      Type of Distribution
For SEO benefits, you'll be looking to get some kind of online newswire syndication. However, don't fall into the trap of paying for a service that only syndicates to the company's self-created blogs. Choose a company who can get your press release syndicated through some of the web's most trusted sites (Google, Yahoo!, MSN, AOL, etc). These sites have a huge PageRank that will give you SEO benefits that are a thousand times better than any blog network.

      Don't Be Cheap

Having worked in PR for more years than I care to look back on, I'm yet to find a free press release service that brings the user any benefit. Aside from appearing cheap to your prospective clients, if they find your release on a free site, it presents a bad overall image against your reputation. You want people to pay for your products/services, right? Well, as you know, in this world you need to spend a buck to make a buck. Plus, the ultimate proof is in the pudding - by paying for a team of press release professionals with proper infrastructure, you'll be getting something that will help you - rather than waste your time and reputation.

How Press Releases Offset Against Your Other Marketing?
Don't do just press releases - but make them just a chunk of your overall SEO portfolio, so it all appears natural to Google. I often talk to our clients about the 'SEO Pizza', which contains twelve slices. Press releases should just be one or two slices, flanked by ten other hot and steamy efforts.

If you strike the above check-boxes, you'll find that press releases can become a vital addition to your SEO strategy.

      Hope this answers your question.
  • If the news is newsworthy, content is good, link is relevant and well-embedded and it brings in some relevant traffic then yes press releases does help with SEO.
  • I don’t think press releases should be used with the intention of an Search engine optimization strategy.
  • Man... that was good around 3 or 4 years ago I guess. Where do people get this stuff nowadays?

I guess if you REALLY have something press worthy to announce and your press release leads to a high quality article on a decent website then it would help. Press releases aren't exactly used for link building, they're used for PR though.

For someone starting out, I think that your press release will be on syndication sites that Google treats as spam anyway.
  • I think you summed up the SEO industry pretty well there. "Works well for some, Doesn't work for others"

The only way to know for sure is to go and try it!
  • Press release is useful for the SEO and also provide the backlink for the website.
  • Yes the press release is not usefull in google ranking, If you see this for the SEO backlinks then it is a very nice backlink for your website.
  • Press release and SEO is very effective technique for get traffic on webpages.
