Why is Google Fetch Failing?

I am using the Google Webmasters Tool "Fetch" to try and have Google crawl a sub-domain on my main site-- where I maintain a WordPress blog. It routinely, fails.

The site/blog has been around since 2004 and has about 4000 posts. I do have a site map, but it only indexes 500 of the urls.

I read in the Webmasters help section that "fails" happen because of site overload or redirection. Neither should be the problem in my case.

Does anyone have another idea?

The sub-domain in your forum sig I see about 20 or so 404 links on your site but most of those are .../tos2.js & a few broken outbound links.

Download screaming frog & check your WP site, see If anything stands out.

Get another sitemap plugin, try the xml sitemap plugin from arne brachhold, I don't think it has any max post limits.

If I remember correctly Google will max out at 50,000 links per xml file, it's still possible to submit unlimited xml files per GWT account. Just pointing that out, doubtful it's causing a fetch problem.
