Question about WMT "Links to your site"

I have a client that has a site and WMT stated that there are 22,371 total back links on the home page but when I downloaded the latest tool the sheet only gave me 700 links.. Anybody can help me figure this or locate the rest of the links?:confused:

    What latest tool? Like an internal link crawler?

    If so they won't count pages blocked with robots.txt, But WMT will. They won't count /? variables either, but WMT will. The list goes on and on.

    edit: I just read that again. Now I'm confused

    Do you mean TO the homepage? If so, Google will always find far more links then any third party link crawler. It's a David Vs Goliath battle there in terms of server power.

      Do you mean TO the homepage? If so, Google will always find far more links then any third party link crawler. It's a David Vs Goliath battle there in terms of server power.
      Pardon me for the mistake but it was a "download latest link" and the sheet is just showing around 700+ links that is way too far from what is listed on the WMT.

        Oh WMT will never give you a full list of anything you might need. Thet're very good at not helping with anything important.

        Or

        https://ahrefs.com/

        But they won't give you the full list either, just a bigger one then WMT will. The webs a real big place. 60 Trillion pages I heard. They can't crawl and deliver everything.

    Run SEO spyglass (1,100 links max on free version) & see If most of the links are sitewide links, considering there's only 147 domains showing on WMT. That might give you a better idea what's going on.

    You can explore it through sample links or a complele list. But it's true. they never provide exact list of backlinks and it would better to use tools like a href, open siteexplorer or majestic seo.

    Webmaster tools is a horrible place to view links, get yourself a sub to AHrefs to get an idea of the links you do have.
