On a carpet cleaning forum I frequent an SEo expert(a guy on the forum trying to sell his service) Was stating that there is nothing more black hat than having two sites gunning for one keyword. any truth to that?

He's clueless, ignore anything else he has to say.

I run multiple sites for a single niche, been doing it for years & never had a problem.

I agree with Yukon. That is pretty dumb. In fact, if you find anyone that is really dominating a town, they will often have 2 websites on the first page of the rankings plus a Facebook page, YouTube channel or video, sometimes a LinkedIn profile, etc.

I can think of a thousand other things slightly more black hat than that

Well, who knows what Google will think some day. They may argue that you are trying to "game" the system instead of building the best single authority site possible. However, if it works for you, I would continue doing it. (I could imagine some day though where Google will look into who owns what domains and only show the best result in SERPs from those domains.)

IMO, If your not ranking multiple pages per main keywords, your not even trying.

If your going to be scared of the SERPs your in the wrong business.
