Ranking based on Keyword difficulty

Hello,
I am a newbie here and it feels great to be a part of this amazing community.

I have a question about keyword difficulty. I am using traffic travis along with google keyword planner. Initially I got about 120 keywords and then seeing the global monthly searches,I cut it down to 50. Most of them are now well above 3000 global monthly searches. The problem is,most of them are ranked difficult according to traffic travis. What should I do? If I pick around 30 keywords from there,will it not convert well?Should I go for it?

  • What'd I'd recommend is the following:

    1) Install Mozbar so you can see a brief overview of site metrics (namely Page authority and domain authority)
    2) Take each keyword and do a Google search, looking at the first page
    3) If you see any first page results that look weak (DA < 30, Backlinks < 100) then there is a good chance you can get up there too. Of course, when you get better at SEO you can compete at levels much harder than this, but these are decent metrics as a beginner.
    4) Create a small test site with minimum content and hit it with a high PR backlink. There are many people who can help you out with this. PM me if you like and I can refer you.
    5) See if you pop up on at least page 5. If so, you're probably in good shape. Keep going.

    • Hi Diggity, can you elaborate on what we should look for in the Moz bar. Does PR matter? Also, I assume your referring to the Page Backlinks?

      I have done a test of this for quite a few long tail keywords and couldn't find one that matched the criteria.

  • Examine the link profile of the top five competitors on each main key term. Software and tools can only give estimates of difficulty based on the amount of links they find, but you are better able to assess the quality of those links.

    If you see a lot of back links from government and educational sites, you know it's going to be a tough battle. On the other hand, you may find nothing but blog comments and social bookmarking links, in which case the keyword that looks difficult is really a pushover.

    • Ah the keyword/ traffic dilemma.

      Well, I would go back to your list of 120 keywords. There is a difference between 'Traffic' and 'Targeted Traffic' Traffic brings in the numbers, but may not convert. 'Targeted Traffic' may not bring in the numbers but should have a higher conversion rate. Ultimately what do you want your traffic to do, look or convert?

      There is a balance that can be made in this process and it is what I call 'nested keyword targeting' we can use a 'traffic' related keyword such as "Weight Loss" and we can take a 'targeted traffic' keyword "Weight Loss for Men" for this example I will even introduce a 'micro targeted traffic' keyword "Weight Loss for Men in Las Vegas" What do these have in common?

      lets look at them vertically listed real quick
      • Weight Loss
      • Weight Loss for Men
      • Weight Loss for Men in Las Vegas
      The obvious in all 3 "Weight Loss" is present and in 2 "Weight Loss for Men" is present. easy enough. About now you are saying, So? Well you can target "Weight Loss" and you are probably not going to get listed for "Weight Loss for Men in Las Vegas", but if you reverse that and target "Weight Loss for Men in Las Vegas" you may get "Weight Loss" because they would both be matches. ( I am not saying you WILL get both, I am saying you are increasing your chances )

      As Sean DeSilva points out there are many factors in getting any 1 keyword, but by nesting your efforts, you wont come up dry. Once you have your site ranked you can start to see keywords you can start improving on, by page changes, or page additions. At the very least Nesting puts you in the game.

  • Selecting keywords can be very challenging but its important to remain on track. You don't need too many keywords. If you use a lot of them Google will mark you as a keyword spammer. Just start with keywords which are not too competitive because if they are, you will have to triple your efforts just to be recognized. Take few keywords and know how to utilize them.

    • If you are keen on relevance of your page, you could make a list of 500 or more keywords. I generally use 200 as a start, when designing a page. "Keyword Spamming" is not about the number of keywords, it is more about how many times each keywords is used. There is a HUGE difference.

      Using the above stated 'Nesting' method your keyword count could go through the roof, and all would be directly in relation to relevance of an article / site.

  • You can rank any keyword, provided that your website is well-optimized for that keyword, has relevant, unique content, and, most importantly: high quality backlinks. If the keywords have a good search volume, I would go for it. Focus on building dofollow backlinks on high PR pages (authority websites) within your niche. Also, spy on your competitors' sites using a tool such as seo spyglass and try to get your backlinks placed in the same places where theirs are.

    "Buyer Keywords" usually bring more sales; however, conversion rates have a lot more to do with how persuasive the sales/landing page on your site is.
