Does having another site name or mention your site without an active link help with SEO? In other words, if I write pinkwidgets.com has great info, but do not make it an active link, will pinkwidgets.com receive an SEO benefit?

    Great question.

I believe that even if it doesn't now, it most likely will in the future.

The other day I was searching for something and, on one site, I saw another web site named, but not linked to. That got me to thinking, does merely mentioning a web site's domain by name (ex. pinkwidgets.com), but not having a link to it, help with SEO for the site named but not linked to?

  • It may not matter but it does show up in Google searches when you search for that website so Google knows about it. Makes one wonder. Won't hurt if the site is mentioned this way 20 or 30 times. Will only build its trustability.

Thanks! That's what I was thinking. It doesn't hurt. But I do wonder if being mentioned without a link helps with SEO.

I don't see why it would help - unless you count "more hits for pinkwidgets" as a SEO benefit. I don't.

Why would Google try to parse text this way? They've got enough in their hands with proper links already. If something, leaving the site unlinked shows that you don't want your site to be associated with them. "These guys are so bad that I wont even give them a backlink."

Links in signature will not help your SEO. Not on this site, and not on any other forum.
Who told me this? An ex Google web spam engineer.

    What's your excuse?

Leaving a site unlinked doesn't necessarily mean the website owner thinks it's bad.

It could just be that they messed up the linking - Google knows that happens and takes it into account, they have done for years.

Could someone please point me to the direction of an article that discusses this thing? I don't see any valid reason why search engines would do this.

I only found a couple of articles that recommended to find unlinked brand mentions to try to persuade the webmasters to link back. And some weird discussion from 2008.

In my opinion it does help. However, we can never be sure whether or not it does, so my opinion is irrelevant.

Even if you do it, I don't see how it can harm your website.

    Good luck with your project!

I heard somewhere Google has taken citations into account on local-SEO already from directory sites. Has anyone did a case study on this? Don't see how it can work though. Say if you get two companies with the same name which domain do you give the credit to. If I had a pub called The Microsoft Windows bar, would the pub's website get a boost in rankings every time someone mentions Microsoft Windows.
